Earlier this year, Konami released Metal Gear Survive to mixed reviews after longtime fans felt that the game deviated too much from the once beloved franchise. Now, eight months later, Metal Gear Survive will introduce a familiar item that was made famous by another Konami franchise, Silent Hill.
In an event set to go live today until November 6, "The Researcher’s Story (Special Edition)" will reward players with some unique unlockables, including the pyramid worn by Pyramid Head from the Silent Hill franchise. Players who unlock this terrifying item will be able to either relive their nightmares or live out their dreams of playing as the iconic Pyramid Head.
To those unfamiliar with the Silent Hill franchise, the Pyramid Head debuted in Silent Hill 2 and became one of the most recognizable and terrifying monsters in the franchise. Although the creature made several appearances in subsequent games, its look remained more or less the same with a masculine body usually carrying a large weapon, and its head buried under a gigantic metal pyramid. The creature is mostly associated with its gruesome kills, which is fitting with Silent Hill’s psychological horror aspect.
The Metal Gear Survive event will also include unlockables such as cassette tapes that contain the soundtrack of both Silent Hill and Castlevania franchises, which will surely add a creepy atmosphere as players explore the dusty environment. Lastly, it is worth noting that players would have to complete the main story of Survive first to participate in the event.
Shortly after its release, Metal Gear Survive struggled to perform, selling only a fraction of its predecessor’s sales. The game’s poor performance was mostly attributed to microtransactions, as Konami initially announced that players would have to pay for an extra save slot. Moreover, Metal Gear Survive failed to appeal to the franchise’s core fans after the game made a vast departure from the tactical espionage action that the previous installments in the series were known for.
Metal Gear Survive is now available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
