Rumors are beginning to swirl about a remaster of Max Payne 3 that's reportedly in development at Rockstar Games. Max Payne 3 was originally released in 2012 by Rockstar, who took over development of the third installment after purchasing the IP from Remedy Entertainment, the maker of the first two games. While Max Payne has always existed in the shadows of Grand Theft Auto and later Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3 helped bring the series to an even wider audience of fans who are still passionate about the high-octane action trilogy today. As such, Remedy Entertainment is currently deep in development of ground-up remakes of the first two Max Payne titles, which have been in the works for several years.
Rockstar Games has been the talk of the town for the past few weeks after delaying its blockbuster Grand Theft Auto 6 to next May and subsequently releasing the game's hotly anticipated second trailer. While the delay was the source of some disappointment for many fans of the legendary franchise, Trailer 2 seems to have calmed down the negative sentiment considerably, as it offered a new look at Grand Theft Auto 6's two protagonists, as well as some of the different locations in and around Vice City. Additionally, Rockstar unloaded a slew of stunning in-game screenshots on its website that eager fans have been marveling over.
Rockstar Games remains atop the gaming zeitgeist, this time thanks to a new rumor started by Rockstar insider Tez2 on GTA Forums about a remaster of Max Payne 3. In their post, Tez2 reports that, alongside GTA 6, Rockstar also has a Grand Theft Auto 4 remaster that's deep in development and could be out by the end of this year. What's more, Tez2's mentions a current-gen port or remaster of Max Payne 3, which could drop shortly after the aforementioned GTA 4 remaster. They also hint that these two games could even be bundled with Remedy's Max Payne remakes.
Rockstar Games Is Reportedly Working on a Max Payne 3 Remaster
It's hard to imagine that Rockstar is looking to release GTA 4 and Max Payne 3 remasters before Grand Theft Auto 6 comes out, as it seems to be an all-hands-on-deck situation for the studio as it works to polish and release what's being called the most highly anticipated video game of all time. Granted, Rockstar Games does consist of multiple internal teams and studios that can handle such remasters, but most of them likely serve as supporting studios for the two main teams, Rockstar North and San Diego. There's a chance that, if these two Rockstar remasters are indeed real, they might be released after Grand Theft Auto 6 is out the door next May instead of before.
It's important to remember that neither the rumored GTA 4 nor Max Payne 3 remasters have been officially confirmed by Rockstar, so fans of these games will need to sit tight in the months ahead for concrete info. Meanwhile, Remedy's Max Payne remakes seem primed to release sooner rather than later, and could even show up at Summer Game Fest in June.
