While there are many great things about Marvel’s Spider-Man, one of its strongest aspects is its narrative. The rise of Doctor Octopus is one of the many things that makes it great, though if Marvel’s Spider-Man fans use a specific feature, they will get a hint that this is coming much earlier in the story.
While a few people may have been caught off guard by Otto Octavius’ turn to the dark side, the reality is that even casual fans know about the character and his story. Consistently appearing in Spider-Man media, including the popular film Spider-Man 2, Otto losing control is a common occurrence. Still, even if players knew his eventual fate, there was no guarantee that it would be explored in the original game, as his appearance could have just been setup for the future.
However, there was actually a way that Marvel’s Spider-Man fans could discover the twist early, getting confirmation that Otto would become a villain. Early in the game, players can see Otto’s character model when they visit his lab. At this point in the game, he is just a harmless mentor for Peter, even going as far as to help make some gear for Spider-Man. However, there is a bit more going on with the NPC. Redditor EamoM2oo4 points out that, if players turn off enemy visibility inside of photo mode, Otto will disappear.
Marvel’s Spider-Man players seem shocked at this attention to detail, as it seemingly indicates how much Insomniac Games thought out the character’s villain turn. As pointed out by the original poster, this does not happen with any other NPCs in the city. Doc Ock’s model is different, with this specific character being impacted by the enemy visibility feature. Still, as pointed out by Reddit user roguebracelet, it could just be a bug, as Otto’s model could always be set to being an enemy due to the final boss fight.
However, as pointed out in the comments by another Redditor named Slafbery, the same exact thing happens in Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Near the end of that game, players get a flashback focused on Miles and his relationship with The Tinkerer. At a museum, they bump into Peter and Otto, with the moment being a great nod to the wider Marvel’s Spider-Man universe. If players mess with photo mode in this scene, and turn off enemy visibility once again, Otto will become invisible. With the invisibility carrying over to a different game, it does seem like more of a detail than an accident.
Regardless of whether this is a coincidence or if Insomniac meant to hide foreshadowing in its photo mode, it is cool either way. Once Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 releases, players may want to mess with the enemy visibility setting to see if it gives them some hints about the plot.
Marvel’s Spider-Man is available now on PS4 and PS5.
