The brand-new trailer for Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse has just been released, and with it comes a slew of cameos and appearances by many different versions of the web-head, along with a very valid question from gamers worldwide. One big reveal from the trailer was the inclusion of the Marvel's Spider-Man version of the web-slinger from the Insomniac Games release, who is better known as the Spider-Man from Earth-1048.For more background regarding Marvel's Spider-Man, the game itself was first released in 2018 on the PlayStation 4 with favorable responses from reviewers and critics. Further updates and releases were provided when Sony eventually released the game on PlayStation 5 and PC with a number of quality-of-life improvements and other small changes, as well as a separate spin-off game in Spider-Man: Miles Morales. One of the biggest changes was the updating of Peter Parker's facial model for Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered. User Croc_Block tweeted for Marvel's Spider-Man to "please don't take off your mask." While it's a seemingly harmless tweet on its own, it poses the big question of which Peter Parker will grace the big screen since no in-game explanation or acknowledgment was made regarding the swapping of facial actors for the role. With such a short appearance of Insomniac Games' Spider-Man in the Across The Spider-Verse trailer, there have been no hints if an unmasked version will make an appearance as well.
Fans may remember that this seemingly small change caused a mixed reaction within the gaming community, with both John Bubniak and Ben Jordan, whose likenesses were used for Marvel's Spider-Man, having supporters of their own. Insomniac Games had explained that the reason the Spider-Man in-game actor was changed was to allow for better facial matching with voice actor Yuri Lowenthal. However, as previously stated, no one knows how this affects the IP since Marvel's Spider-Man is contained in its own separate universe and Marvel seems to interpret the multiverse and movies loosely.
It is yet to be seen whether John Bubniak's or Ben Jordan's likeness will be shown or whether this version will even unmask at all. Another consideration is whether Yuri Lowenthal's will be cast in the movie to provide the voice for this Spider-Man. No details have been released regarding the plot line or how big a role this Spider-Man will play. However, the Insomniac Games version of Spider-Man will appear in Across the Spider-Verse as seen in the trailer.
Whatever the case may be, the fact that Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse has included the Insomniac Games version of Spider-Man is sure to excite fans of the Gamerverse version of the wall-crawler. Fans of this version will have to wait for more information in the coming weeks to see if this is just a quick cameo or if he will play a bigger role in the story.
Marvel's Spider-Man is out now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and on PC. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse releases on June 2, 2023.
