Marvel's Spider-Man 2's emphasis on highlighting both of Insomniac's Spider-Men, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, is apparent in the game's official announcement trailer. But with the confirmation that Marvel's Spider-Man will be singleplayer, fans have speculated on how Insomniac could weave both characters together in gameplay.

Miles, as well as Mary Jane Watson, received intermittent stealth-oriented sequences in Marvel's Spider-Man that let players learn more about him and play from a unique perspective where their character lacked Spider-Man's abilities and gadgets. However, because Miles has grown into his role as Spider-Man in his own standalone title, that will no longer be an option for his character. Recently, one fan has offered an idea that would take from a highly successful narrative blueprint that Naughty Dog has previously employed.

Reddit user sunbatherzero suggests that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 could instate unique paths for each character that may intersect at determined moments, but are otherwise separate and deal with different characters or enemies, similar to The Last of Us 2's playable protagonists' interwoven arcs. The Last of Us 2 establishes a surprise shift in character perspective when Abby becomes playable, once briefly outside of Jackson and then for a prolonged period after a climactic moment in Seattle.

Abby's gameplay in The Last of Us 2 is not half-baked and players may have been alarmed to see opportunities for several of her own upgrade skill branches become available. Abby's breadth of gameplay demonstrates that players will spend time with her that is comparable to how much time they previously spent with Ellie, particularly because Abby's narrative takes place within the same span of days. If Peter and Miles shared screen time this way, sunbatherzero believes their "intersecting arcs" could be satisfying.

Another more likely option, suggested by bshively, is that Insomniac may dip into its own protagonist swap feature that was implemented with Ratchet and Rivet in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart lets players eventually swap back and forth from Ratchet and Rivet in scripted missions on specific planets with the two separated at all times as a result. However, an open-world Manhattan throws a wrench into Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart's mission-select feature unless players choose which character to freely roam as.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales afforded players with less gadgets in turn for remarkable bioelectric powers that would be fitting of their own upgrade branches in a sequel. If Marvel's Spider-Man 2 plans to truly develop both characters as playable protagonists, fans ultimately wish that they will each have significant narratives and gameplay that are unique to each character's abilities, sensibilities, and identities.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is currently in development for the PS5.
