Marvel's Spider-Man 2 brought a whole new set of trials for Peter Parker and Miles Morales to sort through together. As Peter and Miles faced the likes of Kraven the Hunter and Venom, Spider-Man 2 really upped the ante with its villain roster. However, a leak coming earlier this year about Spider-Man 2 may have revealed that even more content is on the way.
The leak happened after this year's 1.002 update. Not only did the patch add a New Game Plus mode, but it also revealed some exciting secrets. In the update, players found a dev menu that led to mentions of unreleased missions based around longtime Spider-Man villain, Beetle. Spider-Man 2's patch notes leading to yet-to-be-released Beetle content have led many to believe that the game is set to get an eventual DLC based around the adversary. Although these discoveries were made during the first quarter of the year, Insomniac has yet to confirm if a Beetle DLC is on the horizon or not. Even if Spider-Man 2 doesn't get an expansion, the unused Beetle content could be waiting in the wings for an even bigger reveal.
Spider-Man 2's Rumored Beetle DLC Could Be Saved For Spider-Man 3
Beetle Making a Grand Entrance
It's unknown how far along Beetle's development has gone, but the uncovered details from the aforementioned patch notes revealed that a decent amount of work had been done on the character. At the end of Spider-Man 2, it felt quite clear who Spider-Man 3's main villain would be, but there is still plenty of room for Beetle to cause havoc. Players discovered a lot of interesting information related to Beetle in the 1.002 update. Various names of Beetle-related missions were discovered, while the most interesting piece of information was that Insomniac had planned to adapt the Janice Lincoln version of the antagonist.
As Tombstone's daughter, Janice Lincoln is well-versed in villainy, and she could easily play a role in Spider-Man 3 if her missions aren't used for a DLC. Spider-Man 2 has already set up plenty of exciting possibilities for its successor, and adding Beetle into the mix could be a compelling turn. Beetle has been an antagonist in Marvel Comics for decades, so seeing such a classic villain make an appearance in Spider-Man 3 could be quite fun. The third chapter in Insomniac's adaptation is already setting itself up to feature one of Spider-Man's biggest enemies, and it's likely that more have yet to be revealed.
Beetle's first Marvel Comic appearance was in Strange Tales #123 in 1964.
Beetle may not be as well known as Green Goblin, but having a lesser-known villain that also has a substantial history in the Marvel Comics canon could be a great way to balance the overwhelming presence of Norman Osborn's descent into crime. Norman as the Green Goblin will be a great villainous centerpiece for Spider-Man 3's story, but there also need to be great side villains who help keep the story and combat diverse.
Whether Spider-Man 2 Gets a DLC or Not, an Appearance From Beetle Now Seems Inevitable
A Beetle Story Arc Likely Waits on the Horizon
A story focused on Beetle can go one of two ways. Either the character will star in a DLC for Spider-Man 2, or they will play some role in a third game. Both routes are fascinating possibilities, especially since the 1.002 update has made it clear that a decent amount of thought has been put into the villain's missions. Of course, this hidden Beetle information could just as easily be scrapped content that was never supposed to be seen. However, the silence from Insomniac points more towards the appearance of the character at some point.
If the unreleased Beetle content was just unused missions that got cut before they could be crafted, it feels more likely that Insomniac would simply say so in order to squash rumors. Only time will tell what Spider-Man's future holds, but Peter and Miles possibly teaming up against Beetle is hard to not get excited about.
