New details about the canceled Marvel’s Avengers Season 2 have surfaced, including Crystal Dynamics’ plans for a playable She-Hulk and Captain Marvel. Marvel’s Avengers battled with a mixed reception and plenty of controversy after it launched in 2020, with much of its criticism being toward its repetitive gameplay and live-service model. While developer Crystal Dynamics made every attempt to bring in players through post-launch story and character content, the backlash only grew with each new addition.
The negative reception of Marvel’s Avengers culminated in the announcement that Crystal Dynamics would end all support for the game last year. March 2023’s Update 2.8 was the final piece of new content that Marvel’s Avengers received, and all the game’s alternate character skins and other cosmetic items were made available for free when the online marketplace shut down later that month. On September 30, 2023, all official support for Marvel’s Avengers ended, and the game was delisted from all digital storefronts.
Notable video game leaker Miller Ross recently shared some information about what Crystal Dynamics would have added to Marvel’s Avengers had the game survived past its first season in a two-post Twitter thread. The first detail was confirmation that She-Hulk would have been added to Marvel's Avengers, voiced by Fire Emblem Heroes and Gotham Knights actor Krizia Bajos. Miller also posted character art of She-Hulk by comic artist Sean Izaakse, giving players a glimpse at how the green giantess would have looked in Marvel’s Avengers.
Marvel’s Avengers Season 2 Would Have Featured She-Hulk and Captain Marvel
She-Hulk’s moveset in Marvel’s Avengers would have been centered around grapple attacks, and her storyline would have depicted Jennifer Walters as a retired superhero called back to action to help the Avengers. Her relationship with her cousin Bruce Banner (aka The Incredible Hulk) would have been extremely strained, and she would have been noted as being attracted to Thor. Mission-wise, Marvel’s Avengers Season 2 would have featured She-Hulk and Winter Soldier operations, with She-Hulk’s quest ending in a boss battle against the Red Hulk.
This would have led to a Captain Marvel expansion, but Miller Ross didn't have much to share about this. He did note that an obstacle to She-Hulk's inclusion in Marvel’s Avengers was the Foundation engine's struggles with long hair, something that Crystal Dynamics was finally able to manage by the end of Marvel’s Avengers’ lifespan. Ross has also asked anyone else with knowledge about Crystal Dynamics’ plans for Marvel’s Avengers in Season 2 or beyond to share their insights into what could have been for the troubled superhero title.
