Marvel Studios and Sony are allegedly negotiating a new deal that will have big implications for future appearances of Spider-Man and his rogue's gallery. The two studio giants already have a longstanding deal in place in regard to Spider-Man, where the character and his foes are in an awkward situation and in between studios, not entirely belonging to one or the other, and with strict stipulations about the studio ownership of the different characters that appear in Spider-Man media. Sony has its own Spider-Man Universe that is understood to be separate and distinct from the MCU, but this deal may change that.
The new rumored deal between Sony and Marvel will loosen these stipulations and allow Spider-Man characters, and versions of them, to feature in movies created by the different studios. What this means for the gaming industry is currently unknown, but it should be a good sign for those who want Tom Holland's Spider-Man in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, or characters like Venom or Kraven the Hunter in the MCU.
The Details of a New Deal Between Sony and Marvel
This new deal will ease some of the restrictions that existed between the two studios regarding the Spider-Man characters that were allowed to appear in the movies that each studio produced. Sony was also operating under certain conditions, such as being required to produce a Spider-Man movie every five years, or else it would lose the rights to the character. With some of the most popular villains being held on either side, such as Venom being held by Sony, and Tom Holland's Spider-Man being held by Marvel, the removal of these restrictions will ultimately pave the way for these two different cinematic universes to combine, and ultimately make it easier for characters that previously belonged to Sony to show up in the MCU, or vice versa.
What this means for Sony is that Tom Holland's Spider-Man could also appear in any upcoming Spider-Man movies that are produced by Sony. Villains such as Tom Hardy's Venom may also finally get to make an appearance in the MCU. Sony is finally loosening its grip on the tight control that it has had on some of the most popular characters in the world of Spider-Man. This change may have to do with its recent box office failures in the form of Morbius and Madame Web, both movies that were adapted from the Spider-Man universe but were ultimately unsuccessful.
The Possible Impact of the New Spider-Man Deal
How the New Marvel and Sony Deal Could Affect Spider-Man Video Games
It's less clear what the implications could be for the Marvel video games, or if it would affect the video games at all. Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 were both big hits for PlayStation. If the deal does go through, there may be a new allowance for the MCU's version of Spider-Man and its villains to be adapted into video games.
Sony will now have the freedom to create Spider-Man movies that don't just include lesser-known characters, such as Madame Web and Morbius, both of which were not well-received by both fans and critics. Another bonus is for the MCU, which will now be able to include some of Spider-Man's most iconic villains, including their own interpretations of the villains seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home, such as the Green Goblin and Doctor Otto Octavius.
