With Marvel Rivals now out of its inaugural Season 0 and into Season 1, players have had a chance to sink their teeth into the game and learn its ins and outs. As a result, the Marvel Rivals community has developed a set of unwritten rules that can help players succeed when diving into the game for the first time. While it's not necessary for Marvel Rivals players to follow these rules to enjoy the game, keeping them in mind should help them form a winning strategy.
When it comes to hero shooters like Marvel Rivals, teamwork is foundational for success, and many of the unwritten rules for Marvel Rivals revolve around best practices for collaborating with a team. From choosing which character to play to understanding the intricacies of Marvel Rivals' unique mechanics, teamwork is at the heart of Marvel Rivals gameplay. Players who take the time to learn their role in a team and how they can best support their teammates are going to have the greatest success in Marvel Rivals.
Marvel Rivals' Season 1 Content will be a Tough Act to Follow, But That's Okay
Marvel Rivals is introducing new content of many kinds throughout Season 1, and this lightning fast pace may be difficult to patch in future updates.
Marvel Rivals' Unwritten Rules for Success
Team Composition Matters, Even Without a Role Queue
While Marvel Rivals doesn't have a role queue that dictates which roles a player can choose from when joining a match, it is still important to select a character that will benefit the rest of the team. Different team compositions can have varying degrees of success, and understanding which role a team is lacking is crucial for building the strongest setup. The team compositions with the highest win rates in Marvel Rivals include:
- 2 Vanguards – 2 Duelists – 2 Strategists
- 1 Vanguard – 3 Duelists – 2 Strategists
- 1 Vanguard – 2 Duelists – 3 Strategists
Certain compositions may be more ideal than others depending on which specific heroes are chosen, but generally, teams will want to ensure that there are at least two Strategists in the make-up, since providing healing is such an important part of Marvel Rivals' gameplay. Teams will want to ensure they have a good balance of offensive support from Vanguards, DPS output from Duelists, and healing from Strategists without having too much or too little of any.
Take Advantage of Marvel Rivals' Team-Up Mechanics
Another layer to consider when looking at a team's composition is the Team-Up mechanic unique to Marvel Rivals, which offers specific buffs to certain heroes if another related hero is on the team with them. Some of these Team-Up abilities are much better than others, such as Hulk's Gamma Charge which he can provide to Iron Man and Doctor Strange, or Rocket's Ammo Overload which he can provide to The Punisher and Winter Soldier. As such, it's important for players to keep an eye out for which characters their teammates are choosing and potentially selecting a character that benefits from a Team-Up with them.
Players can request a Team-Up from the character select menu to let teammates know they're looking to team up.
Utilize Marvel Rivals' In-Game Ping System for Good Team Communication
Good teamwork in Marvel Rivals doesn't end with character selection, as communication during a match can be the difference between victory and defeat. One useful feature Marvel Rivals players would be wise to take advantage of is the ping system, which allows them to call out enemy positions without having to speak on voice chat or type in text chat. With only a click of a button, players can reveal to their teammates key enemy location information, which means there's very little reason not to use this system to their team's advantage.
Destroying Parts of a Map Can Be a Game-Changer
One aspect of Marvel Rivals that sets it apart from other hero shooters like Overwatch 2 is the destructible environments of its maps. Destroying parts of a map's environment can be beneficial for teams, as it can open new routes or remove enemy cover, so it's in a player's best interest to pay attention to a map's layout to find ideal structures to destroy.
Players can press B on their keyboard or right d-pad on their controller to activate Chrono Vision, which reveals destructible points on the map.
