Spider-Man is getting an updated look in Marvel Rivals, one that more closely resembles his classic appearance from the comics. NetEase and Marvel Games’ 6v6 online multiplayer team-up doesn’t have a full release date yet, but gamers around the world have already gotten two opportunities to try out Marvel Rivals and its packed roster of heroes and villains from across the Marvel universe.
Naturally, one of the first confirmed Marvel Rivals characters was the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, with Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Midnight Suns voice actor Yuri Lowenthal reprising his role as Peter Parker’s crime-fighting, wise-cracking alter ego. In Marvel Rivals, Spider-Man is a Duelist, an assault-focused character who uses his iconic web shooters and spider-like agility to swing across the battlefield and land impressive combos on opponents. Spidey also retains his iconic Spider-Sense as a passive ability that warns the player of oncoming enemies.

Marvel Rivals follows the hero shooter formula closely, but it has a few unique features, and its best one makes new roster additions even better.
Everybody’s favorite Webhead has a pair of alternate Marvel Rivals costumes to help keep play sessions fresh, but it seems that NetEase has changed Spidey’s main appearance ahead of the recent Marvel Rivals closed beta test. Noted video game leaker Miller Ross shared updated prestige art for Spider-Man’s default Marvel Rivals costume, which has been altered from the original version. The biggest change is Spidey’s boots, which now more closely resemble those he wears in the classic Marvel comics and other media. Spidey’s chest emblem has also been altered, as well as the blue portion of his upper suit.
Spider-Man’s Default Marvel Rivals Look Has Been Updated
Most of the reactions to Spider-Man’s new Marvel Rivals design have been positive, though the increased amount of black has drawn its fair share of criticism. When the original version was first shown off, some found it to be too overdesigned, as well as a departure from the classic version that fans know and love. While commenting on another post of the new design shared by Caboose, Twitter user TheDeliNBA praised the new design as a mix of Spider-Man’s original costume and the overall art style that Marvel Rivals is going for.
So far, Marvel Rivals has been well-received, with its latest closed beta test managing to amass over 50,000 players on Steam in just its first day. Even other developers are taking note of Marvel Rivals, as some of Overwatch 2’s staff have expressed interest in it and other entries in the hero shooter genre. NetEase still has plenty of time to adjust Marvel Rivals according to player feedback, which will likely lead to more welcome changes like Spider-Man’s new design during the wait for its official launch.
