Marvel Rivals players are rallying together to ensure that the game offers up future characters for free. Not every aspect of Marvel Rivals has been so warmly received though, as the game’s monetization methods fall risk to serious pratfalls of other free-to-play live-service titles. One particular area of concern is that Marvel Rivals will lock certain characters behind a paywall, just like Overwatch 2 once did before outcry led to the developers making new heroes free to play starting in Season 10.

A group of Marvel Rivals players are aiming to ensure that new characters are available for free once they are added to the game by answering a certain question on a recent in-game poll. This poll is open to members of Marvel Rivals’ ongoing closed beta test, with one of the questions being how participants would like to unlock new characters in the future. The answer choices for the question are “All heroes obtained for free,” “Most heroes obtained for free, a few obtained through purchases/missions,” “A few heroes obtained for free, most obtained through purchases/missions,” and an “Other” option for players to write-in another possible unlocking method.
Marvel Rivals Closed Beta Poll Asks Players How They Want to Unlock Characters
A screenshot of this Marvel Rivals survey was shared on Reddit by Maneaterx, who agrees with many of the commenters that the “free” option is the most obvious answer for choosing how new Marvel Rivals characters are added to the game. Others feel that Marvel Rivals shouldn’t even require players to unlock these new heroes by completing battle pass challenges or level grinding either, and that NetEase could just as easily make a profit by charging players for alternate character skins and other cosmetics while making the characters themselves available to all from the start.
Some Reddit users remain pessimistic that NetEase is going to charge for new heroes, given how the UI seen in Marvel Rivals’ closed alpha test seemingly mentioned hero unlocks with an “Unowned” filter option on the Hero list screen. Of course, the point of these surveys and beta tests is to gauge a player’s feedback for upcoming titles, so maybe Marvel Rivals will heed the advice of fans who wish to obtain new heroes for free.
