Summary
- Marvel Rivals fans want a Mystery Heroes mode like Overwatch for added randomness and fun.
- A random mode could draw more attention to aspects of Marvel Rivals' hero balance.
- Using Loki as a basis for the mode could incorporate Marvel Rivals lore into the random hero selection concept.
Some Marvel Rivals players are hoping the development team at NetEase will add an extra element of randomness, and they're using Mystery Heroes mode from the original Overwatch as a point of reference. Marvel Rivals has proven to be a popular hero shooter less than 8 weeks after its launch, but some fans believe this additional game mode could make its matches even more interesting.
Marvel Rivals already boasts an impressive roster of superheroes and the occasional villain from across the Marvel multiverse. With 33 playable characters at launch and the addition of four more Marvel Rivals heroes for Season 1, the roster size will hit 37 as soon as The Thing and The Human Torch make their way to the game in February.
Most players have already settled into a groove of using just their favorite heroes, and some, like Reddit user PuzzledSurprise8116, are hoping that something like Overwatch's Mystery Heroes mode could make the game more interesting by forcing players out of their comfort zones. In a Mystery Heroes match, players skip past the character selection screen altogether, as the game randomly assigns each player a different hero to control. What's more, when a player-controlled hero dies, the game once again randomly rolls a new hero for them to control, ensuring that the playing field constantly shifts with different heroes tagging in and out of the field of battle. The player who proposed the idea said it is "chaotic, totally unbalanced, but at the same time, it’s tons of fun."
Marvel Rivals Fans Want a Random Heroes Mode
More than 1,400 other Marvel Rivals fans have jumped on board with the idea so far, upvoting the original post. One popular idea that could incorporate Marvel lore into such a match type would be to base it around Marvel Rivals' Loki in a game mode called Loki's Lounge. The game's version of Loki already possesses an Ultimate ability that allows him to shapeshift into any teammate or opponent on the same map. With that power in mind, many players think it would be fun to have every player start as Loki before transforming into different characters at random the moment the match begins, adding an extra element of chaos and giving players no time to prepare strategies built around their teammates.
While the superhero shooter has proven to be a massive hit since its launch on December 6, 2024, it hasn't been able to escape heavy criticism from its player community over its unbalanced roster. Some balance adjustments to Marvel Rivals earlier this month have curbed problems like Jeff the Land Shark's Ultimate scooping opponents out of the sky, but additional boosts to already effective heroes like Wolverine and Venom have left players confused. A mode like Overwatch's Mystery Heroes would be likely to accentuate these balance issues, but many fans feel that the luck-of-the-draw nature would be part of the fun.
