Marvel Rivals is outdoing itself with each new season looking as or more spectacular than the last, as well as stunningly managing to continuously conceive incredible thematic concepts revolving around the two new characters it features. Marvel Rivals Season 4, launching on September 12, is notably captivating since it debuts two characters to its roster that would seem like opposites if not for the game’s original lore giving players more to chew on: Season 4.0’s Angela, a relatively obscure character with an interesting history in Marvel, and Season 4.5’s Daredevil, though he’s a far cry from the blind lawyer of Hell’s Kitchen that fans are familiar with.

As always, Marvel Rivals aired a Dev Vision diary recently to discuss its upcoming season, Heart of the Dragon, and inform players about the adjustments and overhauls that will be made, alongside any new features it may introduce. And, while there is a lot to unpack from what was detailed, creative director Guangguang and lead combat designer Zhiyong didn’t zero in on it, but a Halloween event tease, as per a so-called tab at the top of the menu screen, was seen in gameplay footage shown. As for what it could entail, one collaboration/inspiration seems like a no-brainer: Marvel Zombies.

Marvel Zombies is Having Its Heyday, and Marvel Rivals Should Participate This Halloween

Marvel Zombies

Marvel Zombies may not be the most well-known comic book run—at least in terms of fans who’ve actually read the run versus fans who’ve heard of it or believe they know the general premise—but it’s not difficult to comprehend the idea of Marvel characters becoming afflicted with an infection that turns them into the living dead. In fact, the face-value shock factor of zombified Marvel characters is perhaps the whole appeal to Marvel Zombies, as fans get to witness what the likes of Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Wolverine are like as the undead, though their intellect, powers, and personality are preserved.

It’s a bit of an odd storyline that requires even more disbelief suspension than any ordinarily fantastical superhero comic book might, but the basic concept is no less engaging, particularly due to how it leans into body horror and lends itself to mature themes.

Marvel Zombies

Marvel Zombies was unearthed from its restless grave for a mainstream appearance in Marvel’s What If…?’S episode “What If… Zombies?!” On September 8, 2021, and is about to become far more popular than it’s ever been with a What If…?-esque miniseries devoted to Marvel Zombies is scheduled to be released on September 25 of this year—three weeks away at the time of this writing. So, with Marvel Rivals’ Halloween event supposedly around the corner, too, no theme would be more fitting atmospherically for the spooky season.

A seasonal event might not be all-encompassing regarding which characters are selected to receive zombified skins, but there is at least one roster member who’s likely already been written out, as Doctor Strange already boasts a Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness skin, adapting ‘Zombie Strange’ from the MCU movie. It’s also this skin that would make a great argument for a Marvel Zombies Halloween event, potentially serving as a framework for other zombie skins.

Even if it’s only a handful of ghoulish and grisly character skins alongside a festive assortment of Marvel Rivals cosmetics, such as MVPs, emotes, moods, and sprays, Marvel Zombies is likely the scariest and most high-profile Marvel horror project and could provide fascinating costumes. Plus, if not every Marvel Rivals character receives a Marvel Zombies skin this year, that’d simply give fans something to look forward to next year as an annual ‘trick or treat’ event to look forward to.
