A new trailer for Marvel Rivals has revealed that the 6v6 Marvel shooter will be coming to the PlayStation 5. The new trailer dropped during Sony's State of Play and revealed two new characters being added to the star-studded superhero lineup of Marvel Rivals.
Announced back in March 2024 for the PC, fans have been clamoring to know whether Marvel Rivals will release for consoles, and which ones. The free-to-play team battler entered an Alpha test phase in early May for PC players, but since then there have only rumors from data miners.
Marvel Rivals: What to Expect from the Upcoming Overwatch-Style Shooter
With NetEase Games confirmed to be developing a 6v6 hero-shooter for Marvel, there are several important details to know before it officially debuts.
A new trailer during PlayStation's State of Play event revealed that not only would Marvel Rivals be coming to PS5, those players will also get the Scarlet Spider costume for Spider-Man once the game arrives, adding to the list of special skins coming to the game. A new closed Beta test was also announced for the PS5, happening in July 2024. As of this writing it's unclear how to sign up for the Beta, but it was revealed that this Beta test is also coming to Xbox Series X|S and Steam. There hasn't been word yet on how crossplay would be handled, either.

The trailer also announced two new characters coming to Marvel Rivals, Venom and Adam Warlock. The trailer also teased a third new character coming to the game, and fans are debating who it could be. Marvel Rivals seems to be lacking villains, which could narrow down the search. Some think that it could be the Black Panther, T'Challa, but seeing as he's already appeared in the announcement trailer, some wager it could be Shuri, T'Challa's sister, who has taken over for him before in the comics and in the most recent Black Panther film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
As a 6v6 hero-based shooter, comparisons between Marvel Rivals and Overwatch are already being made. This new trailer made a point to show off more of the game's Team Up mechanics, where players can share abilities or otherwise team up with one or sometimes two teammates, allowing strategies to shift and change along with the flow of battle. In this particular trailer, Adam Warlock, Star Lord, and Mantis are shown being healed by their Team Up abilities, and Venom combines with Spider-Man to create a mobile AoE juggernaut (no word yet on whether Juggernaut will feature in the game, however).
It's far too soon to tell whether this will be an "Overwatch-killer" or merely an "Overwatch-joiner", but the success of the Marvel Rivals tournament in May, and its rising Twitch viewership are promising for its continued popularity. It's somewhat presumed that optional microtransactions will be in effect for things like battle passes, premium currency, etc., but with the title being free to play and releasing on most major consoles, Marvel Rivals is almost guaranteed to grow its player base.
