Following a summer of major hits for Sony and its superhero franchise, the company seeks to continue its high by adding two future Marvel projects to its roster. Though there are no details about the films, there is speculation these could dictate the future of Spider-Man and the company.

Sony Pictures Entertainment first acquired the rights to Spider-Man in 1999, and they created two film series with the character, the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire and two The Amazing Spider-Man films featuring Andrew Garfield. In 2015, Sony, Marvel Studios, and Disney agreed to share the film rights and introduced Tom Holland's Spidey into the MCU. In 2019, a hiccup in the companies almost saw the character exiting the cinematic universe. But due to fans' outcry, the studios reached a settlement, which resulted in the making of Spider-Man: No Way Home and the uniting of the three live-action Spider-Man actors. Since then, Sony has also released Into The Spider-Verse and Across The Spider-Verse, which both have seen critical and box-office success.

Amid the success of the Spider-Verse sequel released earlier this month, Sony has added two new mysterious projects to their slots. The first one, labeled "untitled Sony/Marvel," is set to release on November 8, 2024, and the second one, "untitled Sony/Marvel live-action," is scheduled for June 27, 2025. The lack of specification in the former could indicate that an animated film is on the way, perhaps even more Spider-Verse stories.

No further details have been revealed about each project, but what box-office competition they will face can already be seen. So far, the November 2024 film has no rivals, except for Gladiator 2, which will be released a few weeks later. Meanwhile, the June 2025 project will face Disney's live-action adaptation of Moana and an untitled Blumhouse film.

Multiple Sony/Marvel films already have release dates, including Kraven The Hunter (Oct. 26, 2023), Bad Bunny's El Muerto (Jan. 12, 2024), and Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse (March 24, 2024). Nevertheless, there are a few possibilities of what these projects could be alluding to. Venom 3 still has no release date, though there was confirmation that it would start filming soon. There's also Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4, for which Kevin Feige said writers have a story (though it is now on hold in solidarity with the WGA strike). There's also speculation of a live-action Miles Morales film and a Gwen Stacy animated series. When asked about future Spider-Man projects, producer Amy Pascal said there are "a lot of movies to make about Miles and a lot of movies to make about Peter."
