- Tim Miller's interest in an X-Men film based on a comic reminiscent of Home Alone and Alien could intrigue Kevin Feige.
Everyone knows Marvel Studios is hard at work preparing a brand new X-Men film to release somewhere down the line over the next few years. One Hollywood name, who is experienced with the mutant franchise, wants to board the project and bring the team into the MCU.
Thanks to Deadpool & Wolverine and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel still hasn't really said goodbye to the 20th Century Fox era of X-Men films. Many assumed Marvel would fully revamp the mutant team upon getting the film rights back when Disney bought Fox back in 2019. The past five years have proved that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is content taking his time to get the mutant team right while also bringing back familiar faces from earlier X-Men films. Whether you agree that having Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden (among others) return for more mutant adventures in Avengers: Doomsday is a good idea or not, there seems to be no rush to introduce new X-Men into the MCU whatsoever. That being said, one director has thrown their hat in the ring for the opportunity to revamp the beloved superteam in the future.
The X-Men Reboot's Working Title Hints At The Live-Action Debut Of A Fan Favorite Marvel Character
The working title for the MCU's X-Men reboot has been revealed, and it hints at the possible live-action debut of a beloved Marvel character.
While promoting the newest season of Love, Death & Robots, Tim Miller was asked about reviving the superhero genre by The Hollywood Reporter. The Deadpool director's mind immediately went to the X-Men. "I think that Marvel has this secret weapon they haven’t been able to unveil yet, which is the whole X-Men universe—which is what got me into comics," he explained. The X-Men have been a gateway into superhero comics for many people over the many decades since their 1963 debut, but Miller clearly knows his stuff, even having a specific idea in mind for an X-Men movie that could've come to fruition under Fox's watch.
"The X-Men are my favorite characters. I wrote Kevin Feige, and I’m like, ‘If there was ever anything that you would let me do in the Marvel Universe, please, the X-Men would be it.’ I had an X-Men movie in development at Fox when the merger happened, which would have been awesome: [the story was based on] X-Men #143, which was Home Alone meets Alien"
Tim Miller Would Be An Intriguing Directorial Choice For An X-Men Film From Marvel Studios
Tim Miller has had quite an interesting career path since co-founding Blur Studio in 1995. With a background in animation, he got his start in the industry working on short films and doing visual effects work. Eventually, he'd move into video games, working on projects like Mass Effect 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Miller would then become a creative team member on big-budget Hollywood films like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo before becoming a second unit director on Thor: The Dark World in 2013. Then he directed Deadpool in 2016, and the world has been his oyster ever since, having worked on Terminator: Dark Fate, Borderlands, and all three Sonic the Hedgehog films.
While Miller has plenty of Marvel experience under his belt with Deadpool and Thor: The Dark World, it remains to be seen if Feige would give him the reins on an X-Men film. After all, the last feature film Miller directed was Terminator: Dark Fate back in 2019, which is rumored to have lost over $100 million at the box office. Miller also directed the reshoots for the Borderlands movie, and we all know how that particular film turned out. Miller's original X-Men idea, based on 1981's X-Men #143, would've seemingly centered around Kitty Pryde alone at home around Christmas being tormented by a demon... Not exactly a great introductory film into the MCU, even if it would probably make for a fun ride.
At the end of the day, if Kevin Feige wants Tim Miller to direct an X-Men movie in the MCU, the man will clearly be waiting by the phone.
