The Blue Shell is one of the most powerful offensive items in Mario Kart World, but some fans are suggesting that Nintendo give it a new, more defensive function for those who are already in the lead. Alternatively known as the Spiny Shell, the Blue Shell has been a part of the Mario Kart series since Mario Kart 64 and seeks out the racer in first place. On impact, it knocks over its target and anyone close enough with a large explosion, allowing another racer to potentially take the lead during a heated round of Mario Kart World.

Reddit user Zeph_VII thinks they have found a good alternative use for Mario Kart World’s Blue Shell and shared their idea on r/mariokart. They say that the Blue Shell should give the player holding it protection from other items when being held defensively, just like the less-powerful Red and Green Shells. Alternately, it could simply be used as a homing projectile that can be fired backward when the user is already in the lead, eliminating the dilemma of not being able to use the powerful item while in first place.

Mario Kart World Player Comes Up With Alternate Blue Shell Ideas

Zeph_VII points out that players often draw the Blue Shell during the final two checkpoints of Mario Kart World’s new Knockout Tour, which combines multiple tracks into a single continuous race. Using the Shell after taking the lead would be pretty detrimental, hence their suggestion for it to have the same defensive properties as the game’s other Shells. Other players agree with this idea, though some have joked that the Blue Shell would explode after being hit with another power-up instead of offering protection.

So far, Mario Kart World has been a major success for the Nintendo Switch 2, serving as a solid evolution for the long-standing mascot racing series and a solid introduction to Nintendo’s newest console. That being said, there are still a few things that fans would like to see improved on, including the infamous Blue Shell that has struck fear into players who think they have the lead in Mario Kart World.
