Following the news of his departure from Ubisoft, former Assassin's Creed boss Marc-Alexis Cote attempts to set the record straight on what happened, disputing initial reports he chose to leave. In recent months, Ubisoft has found itself in an interesting position, namely with the formation of Vantage Studios, which is now in charge of many of its core franchises.

Despite Assassin's Creed Shadows being a big success for Ubisoft, the franchise seems to be in a bit of transition now that the long-term leadership of Marc-Alexis Cote has left. The surprising announcement initially made it seem like Marc-Alexis Cote left Ubisoft willingly, leaving members of the Ubisoft leadership team, such as Vantage Studios co-CEOs Charlie Guillemot and Christophe Derennes, "disappointed." However, new insight from Cote himself seems to counter that initial report.

Marc-Alexis Cote Claims to Have Been Pushed Out By Ubisoft

In a new post on his LinkedIn profile, Cote attempted to clarify the events based on a "recurring theme" he has been seeing since the announcement. Essentially, Cote states that he did not choose to leave Ubisoft and the franchise that he still has passion for. Cote claims that Ubisoft simply transferred the leadership of Assassin's Creed to "someone closer to its new organizational structure." He also went on to reveal that he was offered a different position, but it was one that he felt didn't actually have the same level of scope as what he had been doing as the franchise boss.

However, even through all of that, Cote reaffirmed his love for Ubisoft and that he has no resentment over how things seemingly ended. He reiterated that he didn't walk away, staying on as long as he could until Ubisoft leadership asked him to step down. Even with new content on the horizon, such as Assassin's Creed Mirage: Valley of Memory DLC, the long-term future of the Assassin's Creed franchise now enters uncharted waters with Vantage Studios firmly in control.

Going forward, it's unknown how the franchise will be impacted by the void left behind by Marc-Alexis Cote. Starting in 2005, Cote had his hands in some of Ubisoft's biggest releases, including serving as lead level designer on Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, before taking on the game director role for Assassin's Creed 3 and Black Flag. It was Cote's dedication to the franchise that ultimately helped land him the role as franchise boss, which put him in a unique position to essentially chart out the future of the Assassin's Creed franchise.
