Developer Bungie has just confirmed that Marathon will be releasing on March 5, 2026. This official confirmation comes just hours after Marathon's release date was leaked via a trailer that went up early on the game's Xbox Club page.
A revitalization of Bungie's 1990s Sci-Fi FPS series, Marathon was first announced at the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, marking the first new project Bungie had revealed following Sony's acquisition of the studio in 2022. Back in the summer of 2025, Marathon had its first closed alpha tests and the feedback following the sessions was mixed to say the least. While critics and early players praised Marathon's Sci-Fi atmosphere and art direction, they had some strong reservations over just about everything else, from meta progression to moment-to-moment gameplay. Just a month later, Bungie confirmed that Marathon was being delayed.
After Falling in Love with ARC Raiders, This 2026 Game Has Jumped to the Top of My Most Anticipated List
ARC Raiders was a surprise hit for me in 2025, and now I have another extraction shooter at the top of my most anticipated list in 2026.
Marathon Confirms March 5, 2026 Release Date
Flash forward seven months and Marathon finally has a new release date. Marathon will launch on March 5, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with crossplay and cross-save being available at launch to those with a Bungie.net account. On top of announcing a release date, Bungie has released a new Marathon gameplay trailer, one that gives fans a much clearer overview of its gameplay loop, its Sci-Fi world, and the general tone that the game is going for.
In Marathon's latest gameplay trailer, fans can spot a few special abilities that will give them an edge against both the extraction shooter's AI and player-controlled opponents, such as a grappling hook that can seemingly attach to air and the ability to summon a clone to distract enemies. In the official announcement of Marathon's release date on Bungie.net, it's said that players will be able to complete contracts for six distinct factions, and that by completing those missions, earning in-game achievements, and finding "narrative items", players will unlock Codex entries that they can view outside of missions that will shed more light on Marathon's world and story.
The official Bungie.net announcement also confirmed Marathon's English voice cast, which features some prominent industry icons. Several Baldur's Gate 3 alumni appear on Marathon's cast list, including Samantha Béart (Karlach), Neil Newbon (Astarion), and Jennifer English (Shadowheart). Red Dead Redemption 2's Roger Clark will also appear in Marathon, alongside Dispatch's Erin Yvette, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's Ben Starr, and The Walking Dead's Dave Fennoy.
