In 2019, The Mandalorian premiered on Disney+ and changed the course of Star Wars. The series kicked off Disney's foray into live-action television series in the Star Wars universe, paving the way for Andor, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, and other shows like the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries to expand the scope of a galaxy far, far away. Grogu in particular became a breakout character, capturing the hearts of Star Wars fans young and old as the franchise's cutest hero .
The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the titular characters' leap from the small screen to a major motion picture, but the film is more than just a continuation of the series in a different format. With Lynwen Brennan and Dave Filoni now taking the reins of Lucasfilm from Kathleen Kennedy, The Mandalorian and Grogu will set the tone for a new era of Star Wars.

When Does The Mandalorian and Grogu Come Out?
The last Star Wars film in theaters was Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, which premiered on December 20, 2019, six years ago. Fans won't have to wait too much longer for the next Star Wars film. The Mandalorian and Grogu will premiere in theaters on May 22, 2026.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Stars Familiar Faces and New Foes
As the title states, The Mandalorian and Grogu will focus on the bond between Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu as they go off on new adventures into the Outer Rim. Pascal has been busy with other franchises, such as The Last of Us and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. His performance as Din Djarin helped solidify The Mandalorian as a key part of the Star Wars franchise.
David Acord is also returning as the voice of Grogu. Acord has worked as a sound editor on many Star Wars projects, and voiced Grogu in The Mandalorian as well. The Legacy Effects team who puppeted Grogu for The Mandalorian will also be returning for The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Also returning is Steve Blum voicing Garazeb "Zeb" Orrelios. Zeb was a main character in Star Wars Rebels, and his appearance in The Mandalorian Season 3, Episode 5, "Chapter 21: The Pirate" shows that he remains working with the New Republic in the post-Empire era. Steve Blum has a long voice acting career, bringing to life characters such as Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop and Wolverine in many entries in Marvel animated series.

Jeremy Allen White & Sigourney Weaves Join the Cast in Major Roles
In addition to returning faces, The Mandalorian and Grogu also has a star-studded new cast as well. Jeremy Allen White stars as Rotta the Hutt, Jabba the Hutt's son. Rotta was first introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008), the introductory movie for Star Wars: The Clone Wars series. While Rotta was a baby during the prequel era, trailers show that he is now an adult, and White will be bringing him to life in the post-Original Trilogy era. White is most known for his work on Shameless and The Bear.
Sigourney Weaver plays Colonel Ward, a member of the New Republic and the Mandalorian's main contact. In an interview with GamesRadar+, Weaver explains that she will be sending the Mandalorian on his mission to the Outer Rim. Weaver has a long history of playing iconic characters, from Ripley in the Alien franchise to Dr. Grace Augustine and Kiri in the Avatar franchise. While Weaver's role in The Mandalorian and Grogu may be smaller, the movie sets her up to be a recurring figure in the Star Wars galaxy.
Jonny Coyne also joins the Star Wars franchise as an Imperial Warlord and the main antagonist of the film. He already appeared in The Mandalorian Season 3, Episode 7 "Chapter 23: The Spies" as a member of the Shadow Council. His role will be expanded as Din Djarin and Grogu work against him in the upcoming film.
The Mandalorian and Grogu's Story Will Be a Sequel To The Mandalorian TV Show
Since fans have followed Din Djarin and Grogu through three seasons of adventures, they may already have an idea of the tone of the upcoming film. While the full plot of The Mandalorian and Grogu has not been revealed, the following is the official synopsis from starwars.com:
The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.
Although this synopsis is a little vague, it does show that Din Djarin and Grogu will still be working with the New Republic to protect it from remnants of the Empire. This plot point continues the trajectory of the television series, which focused on an overarching plot of protecting Grogu from the machinations of Moff Gideon, who was defeated in the third season of the series.

The Mandalorian and Grogu Poster Subtly Reveals Details Hiding in Plain Sight
The first official trailer also confirms the introduction and return of many key characters, such as Sigourney Weaver's Colonel Ward and the return of Zeb Orrelios. The trailer concentrates on action sequences and cute moments, from Din Djarin and Grogu taking down an AT-AT to Rotta the Hutt apparently emceeing or fighting in a match that Din Djarin later fights in. The trailer also seems to focus on Grogu's expanding abilities, from swimming to fighting, and the expanded capabilities of the Legacy Effects puppeteering team as well.
However, even more can be gleaned from the film's promotional materials, from the main poster to the font chosen for the film. The poster evokes old Hollywood pulp movies and even some echoes of the Indiana Jones franchise. The painted art on the poster also resembles the art shown at the end of every episode of The Mandalorian, summarizing the episode's key events. This marketing shows that the film is targeted at audiences of all ages looking to enjoy a Star Wars adventure on the big screen.
