Makoto Shinkai, the name behind the smash-hit anime films Your Name and Weathering With You, has a new film releasing this November. This movie, called Suzume no Tojimari (roughly Suzume's Door-Locking, though an official English name has yet to be announced), released a new extended trailer this past week that shows more than any previous trailer has. The trailer reveals almost nothing about the plot but leaves viewers captivated by the mystery.
Makoto Shinkai has been releasing a movie consistently every three years, and his last two, Your Name and Weathering With You, were box office hits. Shinkai's films are famous for their animation style, especially regarding water, weather, and skies. They are always beautiful in a way that other anime cannot capture, adding something magical to an otherwise normal scene.
What sets Suzume no Tojimari apart from other recent Shinkai releases is that it will come to the cinema in November rather than summer, making fans have to wait even longer for their next Shinkai story. This new trailer, however, gives them something to wonder about while they wait - and of course, it has stunning visuals that won't disappoint anyone familiar with Shinkai's style.
The trailer features the haunting main theme of the movie playing in the background, along with the sound of locks being turned (which makes sense given the movie's name). It also gives a first good look at the currently unnamed male lead, a long-haired boy. It also gives a first look at a few other characters, especially a sentient three-legged wooden chair.
There are a few details in this latest trailer that also hint at Suzume no Tojimari is set in the same world as Your Name and Weathering With You. First, the trailer shows the main character Suzume tying a red cord around her neck, similar to the one that is so important to the tie between the characters in Your Name. Secondly, the trailer shows many locations that are flooded, which is reminiscent of the ending to Weathering With You. It would not be surprising of Suzume no Tojimari will have even more tie-ins with Shinkai's developing universe.
There are two other significant "firsts" in this trailer. One is that it is the first trailer for Suzume no Tojimari to feature any spoken dialogue. The second is that it has English subtitles. Though be warned that the English itself has not been localized, so the translation is pretty rough. Your Name and Weathering With You both received official English translations, though, so it should only be a matter of time before Suzume no Tojimari has the same treatment - at the very least, when the film is released in full.
Hopefully this extended trailer for Suzume no Tojimari is enough to keep fans happy until the film's release in November, but it has not answered any questions about what the film will actually be about. Clearly there will be magic doors involved, and there is likely a romance based on how previous Makoto Shinkai films have been. But other than that, the air of mystery will have to serve as added hype until the film is released.
Suzume no Tojimari will release in Japanese cinemas on November 11, 2022.
