Summary

  • Game of Thrones stood out with complex characters who were as flawed as they were diverse.
  • The show's realistic characters created a gripping narrative, keeping viewers engaged for 8 seasons.
  • Sophie Turner initially wanted a cool death for Sansa Stark, but her evolution into a strong leader won fans over.

To this day, there aren't very many TV shows that managed to pull in mass audiences, and actually keep them for the most part, as Game of Thrones did. The fantasy series, which is adapted from George R.R. Martin's epic books, attracted a record viewership on HBO, which steadily increased over its eight seasons, with its premiere alone bringing in 46 million viewers. Even though its ending was and has been a hot topic that's still ongoing to this day, there's no doubt about it: Game of Thrones cleverly grounded its worlds and characters in such gritty realism that viewers constantly needed more.

Although it's hard to pinpoint exactly what made it so unique, one of the top answers among its fan base is the show's complex characters, who were just as messy as everyone else. Game of Thrones gave its viewers a huge platter of various characters to whet every appetite. From its cruel villains like Joffrey Baratheon, Walder Frey, and Ramsay Bolton to kind characters like Podrick Payne, Hodor, and Davos Seaworth, and some obscure characters too in the mix, the series wove a spell-binding narrative that will forever be a rare quality, especially for TV. However, fans learned pretty fast not to get too keen on any one person from the series as they could get the chop at any moment, but one main star had actually asked for their character to be killed off before the show ended.

Sophie Turner Wanted Sansa Stark To Have a “Cool Death Scene” in Game of Thrones

Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones

Highlighted by ScreenRant, Sophie Turner, who played Sansa in Game of Thrones, once expressed her desire to The Wall Street Journal for her character to receive a "cool death" before season 6 came out. Turner said, "If you're on Game of Thrones and you don't have a cool death scene, then what’s the point?". Although she didn't state exactly how she would have liked her character to meet her fate, most fans can agree that they are glad she stuck around, as she ended up being hailed Queen in the North.

Given that so many characters met their makers in the long-running series, it's understandable why Turner wanted Sansa to join them as her character had been through the mill more than once. She came close to death at the hands of the cruel Ramsay Bolton, who abused her physically and mentally, as well as being threatened by Lady Lysa Arryn due to her jealousy of her and Littlefinger, not to mention Cersi wanting her head on a spike after believing she had a part to play in Joffrey's poisoning.

Thankfully, Sansa's evolution throughout the series saw her become a strong and independent woman, which is a million miles away from the naive and selfish young teen fans saw at the start of the show. If the showrunners, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, had decided to kill off Turner's character like she wanted, viewers wouldn't have seen the shrewd and politically savvy leader she turned into, which was fueled by her experiences and the choices she made throughout the series.
