Magic: the Gathering Reveals New TMNT Set Mechanics

Magic: the Gathering officially shared details about the new keywords and game mechanics arriving with the TMNT set. Several cards in the set will involve creating Mutagen tokens, which can be sacrificed to put +1/+1 counters on creatures, while Sneak lets players put in more powerful creatures by returning unblocked attackers to their hand. Disappear shows up as a keyword on abilities relating to permanents leaving the battlefield, while Alliance abilities care about other creatures entering the battlefield. The set will even feature the return of two classic mechanics, with multiple Class Enchantment cards and a new Character Select variant of the Partner ability, specific to TMNT cards.

The multitude of new mechanics looks to have some major applications in the gameplay of cards from the TMNT crossover. Classes have long been a fan-favorite of Magic players since the card type debuted in Adventures in the Forgotten Realm, allowing players to upgrade the Enchantments for stronger effects. The return of Partner will let players pair up any of their favorite Turtles, Master Splinter, or April O'Neil to build a unique deck around their favorite TMNT characters. Sneak also serves as a new version of the beloved Ninjutsu mechanic, giving players the ability to ramp into some of their most important creatures early.

Magic: the Gathering's upcoming TMNT expansion will bring lots more to excite fans than just its assortment of gameplay changes. Wizards of the Coast is launching a brand-new co-op minigame as a side product for the TMNT set, debuting Turtle Team-Up as both its own co-op experience and a way to teach new players about the game. Wizards of the Coast has also already revealed all the cards releasing as part of the TMNT expansion, following nearly all the expansion's Rares and Mythics leaking during Lorwyn Eclipsed prereleases.

Wizards of the Coast will also return to the Lord of the Rings universe in 2026 with an expansion based on The Hobbit, while a Star Trek collab will round out the year in November. Magic: the Gathering's crossover sets are clearly here to stay, with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles getting ready to come out of the sewers in just a few weeks.
