- Chucky is joining Magic: The Gathering's horror-themed Duskmourn set for Halloween.
- The murderous doll will be featured as Kardur, Doomscourge in a Secret Lair drop.
Wizards of the Coast has announced Chucky will be joining Magic: The Gathering’s upcoming horror-themed Duskmourn set for the spooky season. The murderous doll hails from the Child’s Play horror franchise created by Don Mancini, and the slasher icon joins a Ghostbusters collaboration with Magic: The Gathering for Halloween.
Created by Richard Garfield, the tabletop and digital collectible card game was first released in 1993 as the very first trading card game. The series has released over 100 sets in three decades, and the IP continues to grow and gain new fans from crossovers with Fallout, Jurassic World, and The Lord of the Rings. However, Magic: The Gathering’s owner Hasbro has recently been under fire for AI usage in Wizards of the Coast products, and fans are understandably concerned.
Why Magic: The Gathering's Bloomburrow Set is Quite Literally Suffering From Success
Magic: The Gathering released one of its best sets with Bloomburrow, but it's not exactly all roses.
Chucky is the latest crossover with Magic: The Gathering as part of a Secret Lair drop being added to the horror-themed set. Wizards of the Coast revealed the Duskmourn expansion back in August, and it takes inspiration from horror tropes dating back to the 1980s. Chucky’s Secret Lair set will take five original Magic cards repurposed with Chucky references, including a double-faced card showcasing the doll as Kardur, Doomscourge. Tiffany, Bride of Chucky will also be receiving a card as Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire, and iconic moments from the slasher movies will also be included in the cards’ artwork.
Magic: The Gathering Adds Chucky to the Duskmourn Set
Chucky is the main antagonist of the Child’s Play franchise, and he becomes a killer “Good Guy” doll animated by a serial killer’s soul after a voodoo ritual is performed. Since its self-titled 1988 debut by director Tom Holland, the Child’s Play series has accumulated six sequels, comic books, video games, and a television series centering around returning actor Brad Dourif’s possessed doll. Mark Hamill voiced Chucky in the 2019 movie reboot. Magic: The Gathering isn’t the only crossover for the slasher doll this year, as Behaviour Interactive’s multiplayer survival horror game Dead by Daylight added a Chucky skin recently with a scorched new look, and Dourif returned to voice the character.
Wizards of the Coast is catering to horror fans this year, but gamers are also getting a piece of the action. Magic: The Gathering’s recent crossover with Assassin’s Creed was the perfect collaboration to build the hype around Ubisoft’s November release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Released back in August, the Assassin’s Creed set contained cards featuring iconic characters, locations, and items from the video game franchise.
