Magic: The Gathering has been going strong as one of the premier collectible card games since its debut in 1993. With dozens of expansions and additions covering thousands of cards and iterations of its core mechanics, Wizards of the Coast's CCG has maintained a significant presence in the hobby space for over 30 years now. Magic: The Gathering has also established elaborate and massive overarching plotlines throughout its subsequent sets, continuing the epic journey of some of its central characters while introducing fresh ones, or bringing long-forgotten foes and factions back into the mix.
However, the MTG world has expanded even further than that, thanks to its ongoing Universes Beyond initiative, featuring settings and characters from other, often non-tabletop properties. And within that, specifically videogame IPs, such as Magic: The Gathering's Fallout Commander sets, which were recently released. For its next Universes Beyond project, WotC is collaborating with developer/publisher Ubisoft to translate the world, characters, and story of its longtime Assassin's Creed franchise into the MTG format, and has provided some early hints and teaser reveals for what the collection will entail.
The Assassin's Creed Magic: The Gathering collection launches globally on July 5, 2024.
All Confirmed Cards and Mechanics for Magic: The Gathering x Assassin's Creed Collection So Far
The Assassin's Creed franchise has itself built an extensive lore, having players come into contact via its protagonists with many notable real-life historical figures across its titles and alternate timelines spanning the millennia-long conflict between the Templars and Assassins. MTG's AC set will include serialized versions of some of these, with variations of card text matching the language that each figure spoke for a more authentic spin. Some notable characters appearing in Magic: The Gathering's Assassin's Creed crossover:
- Ezio Auditore
- Altaïr Ibn-LaʼAhad
- Leonardo da Vinci
- Cleopatra
- Eivor Varinssdottir
A safe assumption is that this set will span all mainline Assassin's Creed titles, as multiple versions of AC protagonists representing various stages in their progression through the Brotherhood per the games' storylines can be seen. Some cards also mention a "freerunning" mechanic, though this has not been fully detailed yet, as it is probable Wizards of the Coast will unveil more as it approaches closer to launch. Still, the name alone is very much in the spirit of the AC titles and is a good indication of how MTG will incorporate core AC aspects.
Other cards like Haystack and Hidden Blade capture some of the iconic elements from Assassin's Creed that have been a part of it since the series' inception. WotC has also confirmed extended-art versions of cards, which have their illustrations continuing onto the sides of the card frame. Lastly, there will be Collector Boosters--10-card packs containing foil cards and other special treatments that can have anything from the regular Beyond Boosters, as well as certain alternate versions found only in these Collector ones.
What Magic: The Gathering's Assassin's Creed Sets Might Also Include At Full Release
There are almost assuredly a number of additional surprises and inclusions/mechanics yet to be revealed. For example, although some of the above are among the most well known characters, there are plenty of other obvious choices that fans will very likely see make it into the set. Ones like Assassin's Creed: Black Flag's Edward Kenway, the Borgia family who served as Ezio's primary antagonists, and other tools/weapons like the crossbow and smoke bombs, are all prime candidates to appear in the collection. Even so, as it looks now, the Assassin's Creed Magic: The Gathering crossover is fully ready to deliver a range of new cards in the stye and spirit of the franchise when it releases globally this summer, on July 5, 2024.
