Magic: the Gathering has officially announced an exciting new crossover coming to the beloved card game, teaming up with Sega for an exclusive set of Sonic the Hedgehog cards. The massively popular trading card game developed by Wizards of the Coast has looked to break bold new grounds with its crossover content in recent years. Magic: the Gathering ramped up its "Universes Beyond" initiative this year with multiple new crossover sets, debuting Final Fantasy in June with Spider-Man and Avatar the Last Airbender expansions to come. Now, another iconic franchise is set to make the jump to Magic.

2025 has seen several major changes in how Wizards of the Coast approaches crossover sets in Magic: the Gathering. The developer announced that, starting with the Final Fantasy set, new Universes Beyond expansions will officially be legal in the game's Standard format alongside the typical in-universe sets. Wizards of the Coast also regularly introduces new crossovers through its "Secret Lair" drops, ranging everything from Assassin's Creed to Jurassic World. A new Secret Lair is now bringing one of gaming's most recognizable characters to Magic: the Gathering.

Magic: the Gathering is reprinting some powerful Land cards for the Standard format as part of the upcoming "Edge of Eternities" expansion.

As reported by IGN, Magic: the Gathering has officially announced three brand-new Secret Lair releases based around Sonic the Hedgehog. The announcement confirmed that three separate Secret Lairs will be launching for Sonic and friends, featuring both entirely new cards and Sonic versions of pre-existing Magic cards. The "Turbo Gear" Secret Lair will introduce Sonic the Hedgehog-themed versions of several popular Artifact cards, including "Swiftfoot Boots" reprinted as "Air Shoes" and "Lightning Greaves" as "Power Sneakers." Magic: the Gathering's first Sonic the Hedgehog Secret Lair will be available for purchase on July 14.

The launch of the new Sonic the Hedgehog Secret Lair will bring plenty of exciting new cards and powerful reprints with a Sonic flavor. The reprinted cards are all expected to work in conjunction with the new Sonic the Hedgehog crossover cards, likely focused around the "Flash" and "Haste" mechanics. The selection of reprints also includes some cards which boast significant prices on the secondary market, with "Piko Piko Hammer" as a new version of "Hammer of Nazahn," which has only seen three different printings.

Magic: the Gathering has lots more on the way beyond its newest Sonic the Hedgehog crossover throughout the year. During the recent MagicCon Las Vegas, Wizards of the Coast showed off the first card from the upcoming Avatar the Last Airbender set, depicting Aang in his Avatar form. Wizards of the Coast has also begun to tease its next in-universe expansion as well, confirming that the popular "shock lands" will be making a return to the Standard format in "Edge of Eternies." Magic: the Gathering fans should have plenty to be excited for throughout 2025 and into 2026.
