Puella Magi Madoka Magica fans finally got the news they have been waiting for over the past few years, as both a new trailer and the release window for Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: —Walpurgisnacht: Rising— have been revealed.

Madoka Magica was originally released in 2011, and the movie serves as a sequel to the story. Its popularity grew further when it was added to Netflix, though it has since left the platform. The series received a lot of attention back then for bringing classic magical girl tropes to a darker tone, and the new movie will likely bring it back into the spotlight as new information surfaces.

What to Expect For Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising

The sequel movie to Madoka Magica main series is set to premiere this year, but what can we expect from it?

New Madoka Magica Movie Will Be Released in 2026

  • The movie will be released in Japan in February 2026.
  • A release window in the US is yet to be announced.

Walpurgisnacht Rising was announced in 2023, and now a release window has finally been revealed: the movie will be out in Japan in February 2026, although the exact release date is yet to be announced. This is actually the second time the movie was delayed. It was originally scheduled to be released in Winter 2024, then pushed to Winter 2025, and now to Winter 2026.

The new movie is a sequel to Rebellion, which is a direct sequel to the original TV anime. It is uncertain if this will be the final entry in the story, but Aniplex advertises it as "the beginning of a new chapter," suggesting that more Madoka content is planned. The trailer also features new characters, so there's a fair chance that the film will spawn another sequel.

Will Walpurgisnacht Rising Be Released in the US?

While a release window in the US is yet to be revealed, Aniplex of America has promoted the movie and released English-dubbed trailers, suggesting that they have plans for an international release. Rebellion was screened in the US, so it seems likely that the new movie will also be released in North America.

A throng of witches, woven as one. An accumulation of curses beyond comprehension. People call it... Walpurgisnacht.

In fact, there is a chance that the movie was pushed to a 2026 release because of Demon Slayer. All Demon Slayer films, including the upcoming one, are listed among Aniplex of America's shows on their website. Therefore, they are actively involved in the distribution of this movie both in the US and in Japan.

They likely wanted to avoid overlapping releases with Demon Slayer, choosing to space them out for better focus and promotion. It is speculated that the second movie of the Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle trilogy will be released in 2027, so they would be able to focus on Madoka Magica as one of their major theater releases in 2026.

Madoka Magica is available to stream on Crunchyroll, subbed and dubbed in English.
