Lunar is Making a Comeback Decades Later

Lunar is making a video game comeback to modern consoles after more than a decade of absence. GungHo Online Entertainment will be in charge of bringing Lunar back via the Lunar Remastered Collection. One of the premier RPGs from the early '90s, Lunar was one of the first games to utilize the CD-ROM format by using high-quality audio, full motion video, and voice acting to narrate its fantasy story. While some would argue that the entries in the franchise don't really hold up well to most titles of today, the amount of nostalgia it brings could give modern gamers a chance to experience the great plot that Lunar has.

Many consider Lunar: Silver Star Story as one of the best RPGs available on Sega Saturn. With it being a classic, it also made its way to PlayStation, among other consoles. In fact, from the Sega CD, to the Sega Saturn, to the PlayStation, various remakes of the title have also appeared, with the latest being Lunar: Silver Star Story Touch for mobile phones. At the same time, its sequel Lunar: Eternal Blue also found various ports to several PlayStation platforms, which include the PlayStation Vita and PS3 as part of its PSone Classics series. Now, it looks like both games will be getting a new coat of paint.

GungHo Online Entertainment announced that Lunar Remastered Collection will launch in Spring 2025 during PlayStation's State of Play. And while the reveal was made during the event, GungHo confirmed on its Twitter account that the Collection will also be available on non-PlayStation platforms such as Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Steam. The release will include both main series games, Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar: Eternal Blue, which should appease those looking for the classic RPG experience.

While the trailer didn't detail what changes to expect, the PlayStation blog has shared that many upgrades will be available. From widescreen support, to enhanced pixel art, HD animated cutscenes, and all-new English voice acting, Lunar Remastered Collection will modernize the classic experience. However, those looking for a more old-school feel can opt to go with the original visuals. Many fans are already looking forward to the game's release, with some from the comments section especially excited about the Switch version. Whether Lunar Remastered Collection ends up as one of the best JRPGs on Nintendo Switch may yet be seen, although the chances seem to be high as the console carries a lot of good classic RPGs.

GungHo Online Entertainment may have a challenge on their hands, although the team does have previous experience. Having released the Grandia HD Collection a similar collection of highly touted classic JRPGs, the team also did an excellent job of modernizing visuals, enhancing the UI and the sprites, widescreen support, and the improved cinematics. Many fans already expect Lunar Remastered Collection to be in good hands, especially once the game releases in 2025.
