Summary

  • CI Games' sequel to Lords of the Fallen is in full production, aiming for a 2026 release date.
  • The game will feature a more commercial art style, shared-progression co-op, and higher production values.
  • The new title, rumored to be called "Death of the Fallen," will be exclusive to the Epic Game Store on PC at launch.

CI Games has revealed that the sequel to last year's popular Soulslike Lords of the Fallen has entered full production and may be ready sooner than expected. A reboot of the 2014 game of the same name, Lords of the Fallen released last Fall to mild reception. The game came heavy with bugs and many thought it felt unpolished, though CI Games has improved the game with updates and patches since. Next to Lies of P, Lords of the Fallen was considered one of the biggest Souls games of 2023.

Earlier this year, details leaked about a sequel to Lords of the Fallen that has been in the works at CI Games. Reported to be titled "Death of the Fallen," the sequel was also rumored to be aiming for a 2026 release. It was subsequently confirmed that CI Games signed a PC exclusivity deal with Epic Games which will cause the sequel to skip Steam, at least at launch. Such a deal makes sense, considering Lords of the Fallen was one of the first games to be developed using Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5.

The are over 30 different bosses to find and overcome in Lords of the Fallen, and some of them are a lot more difficult than their peers are.

As part of a new 2025-2028 roadmap from CI Games, the publisher confirmed that Lords of the Fallen's sequel, internally referred to as "Project III," has entered full production, legitimizing the earlier reports of the title aiming for a 2026 release. In the document, CI Games specified that the sequel will feature a "more commercial art style and narrative" with higher production values. Furthermore, CI Games confirmed that the sequel will feature shared-progression co-op, and that it has a full reveal tentatively planned for next year.

Lords of the Fallen Sequel Is In Full Development, Coming 2026

Considering the current timetables of most AAA games, a three-year turnaround for such a big Soulslike game would be quite impressive assuming development of Lords of the Fallen's sequel goes smoothly. While 2027 seemed more probable, Souls fans will surely be happy to see Death of the Fallen sooner. With CI Games mentioning a "more commercial art style," it's a bit unclear whether it simply means improved graphical fidelity or if the sequel really will go with a different art style. CI Games also made mention of two other games it has in development, Project SGW Evolved and Project H. The former is the next entry in its Sniper Ghost Warrior franchise, while Project H references a fantasy action RPG in development at Underdog Studio using Unreal Engine 5.

Since all three of these games are in development at different studios, they're unlikely to hinder each other's progress. With the Lords of the Fallen sequel looking to release in 2026, fans should expect its official reveal sometime next year. The landscape of major Souls games over the next two years seems quiet, with FromSoftware having yet to reveal its next game and Neowiz quietly working on Lies of P DLC. Lords of the Fallen's sequel can potentially distance itself from direct competition depending on what 2026's game release calendar ends up looking like.
