Lollipop Chainsaw will be adapted into an anime, but some fans don't seem happy about it. Adaptations of games, be they anime or live-action movies or series, usually lead to controversy when announced because there are many examples of terrible adaptations. While there are also some good ones, fans tend to remember the bad experiences more.
In any case, Lollipop Chainsaw, a collaboration between the celebrated game director Suda51 and the renowned filmmaker James Gunn, has become a highly praised game. However, since the remaster released last year got mixed reviews, many fans are skeptical about the anime.

The anime was announced by Dragami Games, the company that developed the remaster, via their official social media accounts. The project is the result of a partnership between Dragami and Nada Holdings Corp., and also includes the production of a brand-new game.
There is no mention of Suda51 or James Gunn being involved in the animation, although they confirmed that "key staff members" are part of the development team of this partnership. Neither Suda51 nor Gunn were involved in the remaster, which was originally announced as a remake. It's possible that Dragama and Nada will include ideas supposed to be used in the remaster in this brand-new game, and maybe in the anime too. That said, there is no information regarding a release window or studios involved in the anime production. More details should be revealed in the near future.
Fans Divided Over the Anime Adaptation
- Lollipop Chaisawn anime announced.
- Suda51 and James Gunn apparently not involved in this project.
- Fans are divided over the announcement.
As expected, fans were divided over the announcement. While we can see many saying that they are excited, and Lollipop Chainsaw has many elements that could be made into an amazing anime, others are very skeptical about it. To make matters worse, a few fans focused on a part of the announcement where it is stated that "The development will prioritize staying true to the distinctive tone and spirit of the original work, without imposing excessive creative restrictions in the name of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion)." This information was not included on official social media posts.
While this statement in itself may not mean anything more than that the companies want to signal that they will try to be as faithful as possible to the original story (since fans usually dislike original content in these cases), it has been seen by many as a political statement siding with those who have been asking for "anti-woke" content. Therefore, the news also divided fans over their political beliefs and affiliations. One fan even described it as "an all-time bad idea."
Of course, there is also the possibility that this was intentional, since fans are now arguing much more over this line than over the contents and what would be reasonable to expect from the series. Additionally, since Lollipop Chainsaw is generally not considered a controversial game in this sense and neither of the two companies is based in the US, many also didn't understand why the announcement mentions DEI.
Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP is available to purchase on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows (Steam, DLSite).
