Role-playing game Limbus Company is currently surging in popularity on Steam, with a concurrent player count more than triple its April 2025 figures. Its recent momentum elevated it to entirely new heights more than two years following its original Steam release.

Developed by Project Moon, Limbus Company is a free-to-play gacha RPG set in The City, a dystopian world that also serves as the setting for all the other games from the South Korean studio. Released for PC and mobile devices in late February 2023, its popularity on Steam has fluctuated, typically in response to major updates featuring new character banners and other content. Around its first anniversary, Limbus Company peaked at approximately 35,000 concurrent players on Steam. That record was nearly doubled in January 2025, but player interest declined in the following months, with daily peaks dropping to around 26,000 by April amid sporadic spikes.

The recent spike in popularity coincides with an update that rebalanced Stage 8-30, previously criticized by some players as excessively difficult—even when attempted with Limbus Company’s meta teams. The difficulty nerf, deployed via a hotfix, didn't emerge in a vacuum, but was instead informed by several player surveys. The patch included significant nerfs to the Lobotomy E.G.O::Red Sheet Sinclair Identity, introducing changes intended to address balance issues tied to the Rupture mechanic, as Sinclair’s abilities were deemed overly powerful and disruptive. Among other things, the nerf impacted Sinclair's Talisman and Support Passives.

As an apology for what it called “negative adjustments,” Project Moon provided players with some one-time compensation, including an influx of Limbus Company's premium Lunacy currency. In the days leading up to the end-of-month patch—particularly on May 27, after the upcoming nerf was already detailed—the game saw a spike in both positive and negative Steam user reviews in roughly equal measure. This turn of events suggests that Limbus Company fans may have mixed feelings about the recent changes. Nevertheless, the game still boasts "Very Positive" Steam player reviews overall, based on nearly 63,000 impressions.
