Summary

  • Lies of P removed a reference to the slogan ACAB that previously appeared in a game trailer.
  • Chapter 10's original design included a longer entrance section, but part of it was cut, likely to improve the game's pacing and atmosphere.
  • Dataminers have discovered cut weapons and items from Lies of P, some of which could return in future DLC content.

Lies of P, like most large-scale video games, cut quite a bit of content ahead of its official release last year. While gaming audiences will likely never know every area, item, and idea that Neowiz and Round 8 axed from the breakout Soulslike, a few notable bits of cut content have been caught by Lies of P fans.

Since its initial reveal, Lies of P captured the attention of many Soulslike fans, with countless comparisons being made between Lies of P and FromSoftware's Bloodborne. While its alluring art style and unique approach to Soulslike gameplay appeared promising, few could predict how good the game would actually be. The final product turned out to offer far more than just a decent alternative to a FromSoftware game, with its satisfying gameplay and ingenious progression systems striking a chord with players looking for a complex and challenging experience with a unique backdrop. The success of the game wasn't achieved without making a few significant cuts, though.

Content That Didn't Make It to Lies of P's Final Build

Lies of P Once Had an ACAB Reference

The narrative of Lies of P is built around the struggle between humans and puppets, with the latter group revolting and causing the Puppet Frenzy. At one point in development, the game's developers were going to make a connection between this fictional struggle and the real-world conflict of police brutality. Lies of P was going to include a sign reading APAB, an obvious reference to ACAB, or All Cops Are Bastards, which is a slogan used by those protesting the police.

The sign, which appeared in an early gameplay trailer for the game, was removed from the final build. Lies of P director Ji-Won Choi told Sports Illustrated that the team cut this reference because they wanted the game to be judged on its own merits rather than in relation to real-world issues. The dark fairy tale premise of Lies of P, naturally, has little in common with the real world, so it was probably wise for Neowiz and Round 8 Studios to cut this reference, as there's a good chance it would have been poorly received.

Lies of P's Tenth Chapter Used To Be Much Bigger

When Lies of P players first start Chapter 10, after they ride the secret elevator down from Hotel Krat, they will find themselves in a large cave. Closer to the cave's ceiling, a series of bridges, cliffs, and platforms can be seen, but this part of the level can't be visited. Through mods and exploits, players have been able to access this area, discovering that the bridges and cliffs lead up to a mysterious room and an elevator platform that was likely intended to serve as the level's original entry point.

It's likely that this was removed to help the pacing and atmosphere of Lies of P. Taking an elevator down from Hotel Krat only to descend a mostly unremarkable path of rope bridges and cliffsides would probably be a bit underwhelming, so this cut appears to be another wise move by the developers.

A Number of Items Were Cut From Lies of P

Dataminers have unearthed a handful of different weapons and key items cut from the final game. Some of these items were likely minor, while others may have connected to major side content in Lies of P. Cut items include:

  • Cricket Mark: a quest item that could earn The Survivor's friendship
  • Leo's Bell: an item used to summon The Survivor in battle
  • Rose: used to signify friendship at "Murphy's tree"
  • Handkerchief: an item that could be given to Belle, likely replaced by Atkinson's Letter
  • The serrated circular saw weapon from an early gameplay trailer

It's possible that other bits of cut content will appear as time goes on, especially as players delve deeper into the game's files. There's also a chance that future Lies of P DLC may incorporate some of this unused content.
