Gaten Matarazzo Says LEGO Star Wars: RTG is About Breaking…

Recent Star Wars projects have had a pretty tough time. The Disney+ series, The Acolyte, has been canceled after just one season, for example, while Massive Entertainment's Star Wars Outlaws launched to a relatively mixed reception, despite having grand ambitions as the first truly open-world Star Wars game. However, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, the brand-new Disney+ animated show starring Gaten Matarazzo, is hoping to change all of that with a fresh, innovative take on the Star Wars universe.

In an interview with The Best War Games, Gaten Matarazzo discussed how the pressures of appeasing the Star Wars fanbase are somewhat offset by the fun, lighthearted nature of the project. He talked about the "all bets are off" nature of the show and how its purpose is to reimagine famous characters and locations as fans know them into completely new concepts and ideas. Indeed, the show could be just what the Star Wars universe needs right now: some good, old-fashioned, uncomplicated fun.

LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy's Concept Allows For Creative Freedom

LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy stars Matarazzo as Sig Greebling, a young introvert who is suddenly whisked away on an adventure that sees him stumble across a Jedi Temple. While there, he accidentally disrupts the Cornerstone, a sacred piece of LEGO, which completely changes the galaxy. This essentially flips the universe as Star Wars fans know it on its head, creating some incredibly unusual concepts such as Jar Jar Binks as a Sith lord and Tatooine as a swamp planet. Matarazzo was quick to highlight just how much freedom this concept gives the show:

''I think what's fun is that it’s like a full rebrand shift of the Saga and the timeline that we know. It doesn't necessarily need to fit into a canon world, because the whole point of the show is ripping that canon apart and just mix-and-matching it as you would with actual LEGO."

LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy Will Feature Some Familiar Faces

This premise opens doors and possibilities for the show that simply don't exist in most other Star Wars-themed projects, so it's easy to see why Matarazzo believes it will be well-received by fans. He acknowledges that there is currently ''a little bit of stress'' surrounding recent projects set in the Star Wars world, but explained this show could be a great remedy for that, going on to call it ''a project that's super fun and low stakes that is made by fans, for fans.''

Despite its lighthearted nature, it is still very much an authentic Star Wars experience, evidenced by the inclusion of legendary Star Wars actors such as Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels. Matarazzo spoke of his excitement that Hamill, in particular, was on board:

''When Mark decided—very graciously—to be a part of this project, we were all so excited because not only is he one of the most iconic actors alive for his work that he did with the Star Wars universe but he's also one of the most talented and accomplished voice actors to be in the game."

It seems as if LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy has arrived at a great time for fans of the franchise in need of some good news. Using the same trademark witty humor that has become associated with animated LEGO projects, it should target a pretty wide demographic and Matarazzo confirmed that older fans will appreciate the plethora of Easter eggs and other references scattered throughout the show.
