LEGO has announced a new set in the form of 11389 Project Hail Mary. Part of the company's evergreen Icons theme, the upcoming kit is based on the eponymous movie adaptation and includes LEGO's first-ever Ryan Gosling minifigure.
The original Project Hail Mary is a 2021 science fiction novel written by Andy Weir, who also authored The Martian. A film adaptation starring Ryan Gosling is scheduled for release on March 20. In late 2025, leaker ac_bricks_03 reported that a LEGO set based on Project Hail Mary was in development and targeting a March 2026 launch. That report was fully confirmed on February 5, when LEGO officially announced the new set.

LEGO Project Hail Mary Set Lands March 1
Identified by set number 11389, the newly announced Project Hail Mary kit—launching March 1—is part of the LEGO Icons theme. Like most products in the series, it is aimed at adult builders, as indicated by its 18+ age rating, and is primarily intended for display rather than play. The 830-piece set includes a microscale rendition of the Hail Mary spacecraft, together with a buildable Rocky alien and a Ryland Grace minifigure. As Grace is portrayed by Ryan Gosling in the film adaptation, the set will debut LEGO's first-ever minifigure based on the Hollywood A-lister.

LEGO Project Hail Mary Set's Rotating Base Is Both a Blessing and a Curse
One of the defining features of the newly revealed set is its display design. The Hail Mary spacecraft replica is mounted on a large base that can be rotated using a crank, simulating the crew module’s centrifugal gravity system. While this mechanism adds to the set’s display potential and differentiates it from many other LEGO spacecraft models, it also means that a substantial portion of the 830 piece count is devoted to the rotating base, leaving the spacecraft itself relatively small.
Recent reviews of sets such as 10363 Leonardo da Vinci’s Flying Machine, 71411 The Mighty Bowser, and 75428 Battle Droid with STAP show that some builders have criticized their display bases for being overly complex and inflating their overall piece counts with no significant benefits. In that context, the 11389 Project Hail Mary set appears to follow a similar design approach, although its display base at least offers some extra functionality. Rotating LEGO displays are not a new concept, having appeared as early as the LEGO Education 9686 kit released in 2009. More recently, the feature was used in the 42221 NASA Artemis Space Launch System Rocket, a Technic set released as part of LEGO's January 2026 offerings.

Pre-orders for the newly announced set are now open at $99.99, with the product scheduled to hit the market on March 1, just a few weeks ahead of the Project Hail Mary film premiere. Only LEGO's official website is currently offering advanced orders, though licensed distributors are expected to follow suit in the coming days. As of February 5, LEGO is limiting pre-orders to three per customer, which is one of its standard operating procedures geared toward minimizing scalping.
While the Project Hail Mary set will mark the first Ryan Gosling minifigure in LEGO’s history, another similar release may follow, as the actor is also set to star in Star Wars: Starfighter, which is scheduled to premiere on May 28, 2027. Since every Star Wars film to date has received a LEGO tie-in or three, another Gosling-inspired minifigure appears likely.
