Dragon Ball Super fans got good news and bad news during Paris Japan Expo 2025, when it was revealed that the manga won't resume in the next few months. However, looking on the bright side, Toyotaro at least stated that he believes in being able to continue the story without Akira Toriyama.
Dragon Ball Super went on hiatus in March 2024, following the announcement of Toriyama's passing. Then, in February 2025, a new, special chapter was released. This chapter was included in Volume 24, released in Japan in April, as Chapter 104. However, while fans expected the series to continue following the new chapter in February, no news has been released ever since.
Why Dragon Ball Super's Return Might Take Longer than Expected
Dragon Ball Super won't return to serialization within the new few months, and here's why.
Dragon Ball Super Won't Return in 2025
- Toyotaro has been seeing "some bad things" according to Torishima
- Toyotaro's condition could be related to Dragon Ball Super's hiatus
At Japan Expo, Toyotaro stated that he believes he could continue the story without Akira Toriyama, although it would be difficult. While fans took this as a sign that he is still trying to figure out how to continue the story, his editor, Victory Uchida, delivered the most disappointing news of 2025 for Dragon Ball fans. Uchida stated multiple times that the manga won't resume serialization this year. However, he didn't give any reasons for it.
Now, in a new episode of Koso Koso, legendary former Dragon Ball editor Kazuhiko Torishima gave some information that might explain why it is taking so long for the story to return. According to him, Toyotaro is going through a bad time. Of course, neither Torishima nor anyone else who joined the episode delved deeper into his situation. It could be a personal matter, or it could also be related to the reported litigation over the rights to the Dragon Ball franchise. It has been reported that Shueisha and Capsule Corporation Tokyo are in a legal battle to decide who owns what in the franchise, and this might be impacting the possibility of continuing Dragon Ball Super for a while.
Naz, Torishima, and Nakatsuru were at Japan Expo, as everyone knows. Along with "Toyotaro, who's facing some pretty bad things at the moment."

Still, given that Toyotaro worked closely with Toriyama, he could also be going through a difficult time in relation to his motivation to keep writing the story. Considering that Toyotaro has worked on a new, original manga, which he revealed at the event, he could be considering distancing himself from the franchise, at least for a while, to try new things. As mentioned, it could also be something personal, totally unrelated to Dragon Ball.

Neither Toyotaro nor Uchida made statements suggesting that the manga would be canceled. It is clear that the story is on hold for now, and this could be related to many different things, including the mentioned litigation. While there may be internal discussion on V-JUMP to decide the future of the manga, and the possibility of canceling the manga might be on the table, it's likely that no final decision has been made. Since V-JUMP still advertises Dragon Ball Super as one of its flagship titles, it seems that Shueisha is still expecting it to return.
Dragon Ball Super is available to read on MANGA Plus.
