Lance Reddick recorded his voice lines for Thordak in The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 before he passed away. This means the third season of Critical Role’s Dungeons and Dragons-inspired animated series will be one of the last places for Reddick’s fans to experience his acting.

The Legend of Vox Machina is an animated series based on the first campaign of Critical Role, the Dungeons and Dragons roleplay that has helped propel the TTRPG into mainstream culture over the last decade. During the second season of the series, the Chroma Conclave – a cabal of evil dragons hell-bent on revenge and world domination – act as the main antagonists, with Thordak the Cinder King, voiced by Lance Reddick, as their leader.

Unfortunately, Reddick passed away in March 2023, a month after the second season finished, calling his role in the next season into question.

Destiny 2 Gives First Look at Keith David as Zavala

With just days to go until the launch of The Final Shape, Destiny 2 gives players an early glimpse of Keith David's portrayal of Commander Zavala.

Critical Role has revealed some good news for Reddick fans. During the recent trailer for The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3, viewers recognized Reddick’s iconic voice during the scenes with Thordak. On the official Discord server for Critical Role’s Beacon streaming service, fellow voice actor and cast member Sam Riegel confirmed that Reddick finished recording all of Thordak’s lines before he passed, meaning the show did not need to recast him.

Lance Reddick as Thordak in The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3

Reddick has over 100 acting credits to his name, with his work as Charon from John Wick and Cedric Daniels from The Wire as two of his most well-known live-action roles. Gamers will also recognize Reddick as Commander Zavala from Destiny 1 and 2 and Sylens from the Horizon series. The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 joins several other works that were released after his passing, including Percy Jackson and the Olympians, where he played Zeus, and Invincible: Atom Eve, where he provided the voice for Steven Erickson.

At least three other works starring Reddick – post-apocalyptic survivor story St. Sebastian, sci-fi thriller Apteros, and John Wick spinoff Ballerina – are set to release after The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3. His role as Thordak won’t be the last place viewers will be able to see the acting legend, but it will certainly be one his fans won’t want to miss.

The third season of The Legend of Vox Machina begins airing on Prime Video on October 3. While fans of the first Critical Role campaign knew this arc was going to be an emotional rollercoaster, hearing Reddick finish out Thordak’s story may be one of the most bittersweet moments in the show.
