Crystal Dynamics, the developer of Marvel's Avengers and the recent Tomb Raider games, is now inviting people to fill out a special survey about one of its oldest, most highly acclaimed series: Legacy of Kain. Though there had been rumors of the series' revival, there were no official hints that the studio was looking into the IP up until now.

The fact that Crystal Dynamics didn't have much to say on the front of Legacy of Kain isn't overly surprising, however, as the studio has had its hands full with a variety of other projects in the interim. For the most part, its output has consisted of supporting Marvel properties while under the Square Enix umbrella, and though the Marvel's Avengers live service offering was not received well.

All of that is now, by the looks of it, in the past, as Crystal Dynamics regained control over its IPs when Square Enix sold the studio off to Embracer Group. It seems that there's already something afoot on that front, as the developer is now inviting fans of the Legacy of Kain franchise to fill out a special (and comprehensive) survey about what they'd like to see from it next. The survey is rather substantial, asking fans for insight on what they consider to be the archetypal Legacy of Kain experience, and whether they'd prefer to see a remaster, a remake, or a completely new title first. It was in mid-2021 that rumors came about that there was a Legacy of Kain remaster in production. At the time, sources claimed that there'd be an announcement of a refreshed version of Soul Reaver before the end of the year, only for nothing to come of it in the end. With Crystal Dynamics only just now asking what fans would like to see from the franchise down the road, and with a remaster specifically listed as one of the options, it seems fair to assume that this set of rumors was almost certainly false.

While it's certain that it's going to be a good long while until anything concrete in regard to Legacy of Kain is announced, the fact that Crystal Dynamics is looking at harnessing fan feedback this early on is a good sign. The studio is currently helping with the reboot of Perfect Dark, and odds are good that it has a few other projects in tow before it can jump onto Legacy of Kain proper.

Though Embracer Group owns numerous studios by now, the holding company has been mainly hands-off in most respects, seemingly content with letting developers do their own thing for the time being. This may mean that the next Legacy of Kain game is simply a matter of time, seeing Crystal Dynamics' apparent interest in the IP, and fans will need to submit their own input via the survey if they want their opinions to be taken into consideration.
