Summary

  • Rumors suggest the PC port for The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered has been done since 2023.
  • The PC port may be releasing alongside the second season of the TV series in 2025.
  • Hopefully confirmation of the PC port comes later this year.

According to a notable leaker, development on the PC port for The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered was completed several months ago. PlayStation released the remaster of the critically-acclaimed The Last of Us Part 2 earlier this year exclusively on PS5, packing in graphical improvements, cut levels, a brand-new No Return roguelike mode, and more. However, developer Naughty Dog has been oddly quiet about a PC release for the title.

Naughty Dog released The Last of Us Part 2 in 2020 as one of the final first-party titles to bookend the PS4 generation. The game was a massive critical and commercial success, and even went on to win the coveted Game of the Year award that year. Although it was embroiled in a lot of controversy, The Last of Us Part 2 achieved impressive sales figures, selling over 10 million copies as of 2022. Earlier this year, Sony released a remastered version of the game, and like with The Last of Us Part 1 remake, many expected a PC version to be announced alongside it, but it never ended up happening.

The Last of Us 2 Remastered's Rumored PC Release Has to Avoid an Obvious Pitfall

It's been recently rumored that The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered could be coming to PC, and if that's true it needs to avoid one obvious past mistake.

The Last of Us Part 1 launched on PC about six months after its debut on PS5, but no such confirmation was given for The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. Surprisingly, though, a new report from credible insider billbil-kun writing for Dealabs alleges that PlayStation has been sitting on a PC port for The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered for at least seven months. The leaker claims that development on the port started in 2021 and has been completed since "at least" November 2023. It's currently unknown why Sony is refraining from announcing the PC port, especially since 2024 marks four years since the game's launch on PlayStation.

PlayStation May Be Waiting for Season 2 of the TV Series

The leaker theorizes that Sony may be holding off on The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered's PC port to launch it alongside season 2 of The Last of Us TV series, which is set to premiere in the first half of 2025 on HBO. This is a likely theory, considering Sony's pattern of releasing games adjacent to its PlayStation Productions projects in the same approximate timeframe. The Last of Us season 2 will adapt the story of The Last of Us Part 2, so it'd make sense for the PC port to release around the show's debut.

Season 2 of The Last of Us is currently filming, and if everything remains on track, Sony could release a trailer for the show in the second half of the year, and this announcement could formally reveal The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered's PC port alongside it as well. For now, though, PC players only have God of War Ragnarok to look forward to in September 2024.
