Naughty Dog has joined up with all of the developers taking advantage of the Summer Game Fest hype. On Wednesday, Sony hosted a new State of Play online presentation focusing solely on The Last of Us Part 2. The presentation was 23 minutes long and, for the most part, was compromised almost entirely of gameplay. It even closed out with 8 minutes of pure new The Last of Us Part 2 gameplay. Much of, if not the majority of, the gameplay shown in today's The Last of Us Part 2 State of Play has been previously shared. It strings together clips and recordings of gameplay from many previous Sony events. That makes it the perfect opportunity to catch up on previous The Last of Us Part 2 reveals, as well as the newest extended gameplay video.
The early footage shared in The Last of Us Part 2's State of Play is mostly cinematic in-game footage. It catches viewers up on what's been teased of The Last of Us Part 2's story, including how it connects to the original game. It also teases several characters, some new and some old, as well as exactly what protagonist Ellie is up to in The Last of Us Part 2.
From there, the presentation shifts towards gameplay and developer commentary. Game director Neil Druckmann goes over several of the gameplay focuses of The Last of Us Part 2. Gameplay details like The Last of Us Part 2's much more open world and how Ellie is much more agile and sneaky than Joel was in The Last of Us. It also goes over the various enemy factions found in-game, and even teases some new infected enemy types.
Finally, the dev commentary ends and an entirely new extended gameplay video is shown. It shows Ellie battling against a militaristic faction in close quarters. Ellie is forced to use stealth, her quick crafting abilities, and environmental opportunities to take on these enemies. The video ends with Ellie meeting someone she's been searching for. Why she's searching for her isn't clear, but it isn't a friendly meet-up.
By the end of The Last of Us Part 2's State of Play, viewers should well understand whether the game is something they should be excited about. Given The Last of Us Part 2's quickly approaching release date, now's the time to get excited.
