As of version 1.1, Last Epoch: Harbingers of Ruin, you can now find Nemesis encounters while exploring the game. These can be found in the Campaign and in the Monolith of Fate, offering players new opportunities to earn rare loot and, in some cases, upgrade existing pieces of equipment.

Players taking part in the current cycle of Last Epoch will be able to find Nemesis encounters just by exploring each location as normal, with the game using a few different methods to help you track them down more easily. This guide will break down how the system works and talk about the mechanics in detail.

Last Epoch Harbingers of Ruin Overview
Last Epoch: Harbringers of Ruin - What's New and All Changes

With the release of Harbingers of Ruin, Last Epoch has begun a new cycle and introduced tons of new features and mechanics.

Where to Find Nemesis Encounters

Nemesis Encounters can be found throughout the Campaign and when exploring timelines with the Monolith of Fate. You'll occasionally stumble across corpses surrounded by floating armor, the remains of those slain by the Harbingers. When you're close to a Nemesis Encounter you'll see a message in the chat saying "The vengeful remains of a Harbinger's victim linger nearby..." You can also spot them via their map icon when you're near them.

How Nemesis Encounters Work

When you find one of these corpses, you can interact with it to see the loot it offers. Each Nemesis offers four pieces of loot and gives you three options about what to do. If you "Banish" it you'll get rid of it and lose access to that loot, but the next Nemesis you encounter will have completely different loot. If you choose "Challenge" the corpse will reanimate as a miniboss that will drop the loot when slain. The final option, "Empower", also triggers a miniboss fight but causes the Nemesis to escape afterwards. This will cause the same Nemesis to be encountered the next time you find a Nemesis, and will also upgrade the loot it offers in various ways. (Increased Affix Tiers, Forging Level, or Legendary Potential, with the possibility of raising an Affix to rank 6 or 7.)

By making use of Empower when you find a Nemesis with good loot, you can potentially upgrade your rewards considerably. Each Nemesis can be empowered twice before the option vanishes, leaving you with the choice of Banishing or Challenging the fully empowered Nemesis.

What is the Egg of the Forgotten?

Last Epoch_Egg of the Forgotten

The Egg of the Forgotten is a special item that can sometimes be offered as loot by a Nemesis. If you challenge the Nemesis immediately, it will turn into a random unique item, but its true value lies in its ability to be replaced with one of your own items. You can replace it with a Unique item from your inventory that has no legendary potential to empower it via the Nemesis System, allowing you to turn it into a legendary or give it legendary potential. Strategic use of the Egg of the Forgotten when it appears can help you improve your gear considerably.
