Fans have been eagerly awaiting Larian Studios' next game ever since the Baldur's Gate 3 developer confirmed they were moving away from the popular Dungeons and Dragons- related IP to work on an original project. At The Game Awards 2025, viewers got their first glimpse at Larian's new game, Divinity, part of their popular Divinity series. Divinity fans have been waiting for a new game since 2017's Divinity: Original Sin 2, and the wait is over at long last.

Eagle-eyed fans began speculating that a Divinity reveal was due at the Game Awards 2025 ever since Geoff Keighley summoned a strange "demonic" statue in the Mojave Desert. Some speculated that the statue might relate to a different game entirely, such as something in the Diablo franchise. However, the tie to Divinity was made due to the appearance of a symbol on the statue that almost exactly matched a Divinity- related trademark recently filed by Larian. When asked about the statue, publishing head Michael Douse stated on Twitter "There aren't currently any plans for a new Divinity: Original Sin 3 game," which, in retrospect, seems to have been a cheeky nod to Divinity, which continues the series but does not utilize the Original Sin subtitle.

The Series Continues With Divinity — And It's Even Bigger Than Baldur's Gate 3

The presentation at The Game Awards 2025 began with several actors in costume being pulled into the air on wires before the trailer was revealed. It featured a number of mysterious images, including a man bound in chains with a star-shaped symbol carved on his chest and a strange festival with major folk horror vibes that brought to mind films like Midsommar or The Wicker Man. Ultimately, the unfortunate man was sacrificed in a grisly display, with strange monsters emerging from his burning flesh. It was a trailer ripe with unexpected body horror and viscera, likely shocking a viewer or two. Was that the most graphic trailer ever shown at the Game Awards? It's definitely possible.

Very few plot details were revealed about the game, but it does seem to focus on themes of sacrifice, ritual, and folk horror. It is possible that the gold-masked figures shown sacrificing the man will be an in-game faction, potentially an antagonistic one. The trailer was very much an early teaser, whetting fans' appetites while studiously avoiding revealing anything concrete about the next title in the popular Divinity series. Given that this is Larian Studios, however, it is likely the game will feature themes of morality, multiple paths to follow, and complex, morally ambiguous decisions for the player to make.

Geoff Keighley confirmed that the game was Larian's "biggest game ever," even larger than Baldur's Gate 3 and offering "more depth and breadth" He also revealed that the statue was called "the Hellstone," although he wasn't able to reveal any more information. Keighley, an avowed Larian fan, seemed extremely excited to see the latest offering from the successful studio. Currently, no release date has been revealed for the title, although it is possible that it may enter Early Access before its official release, especially given that 2023 Game of the Year winner Baldur's Gate 3 experienced massive success in Early Access before its final debut.

While some fans are disappointed that Larian is not making any DLC for Baldur's Gate 3, nor will they be working on a hypothetical Baldur's Gate 4, it is exciting to see the studio return to the Divinity series. Larian will be able to use the knowledge and experience they developed over years of creating Baldur's Gate 3 to make this new Divinity game an exciting and rich offering that both new fans and series veterans can enjoy.
