A stand-out feature of the original 1986 film Top Gun was its soundtrack, especially its signature song, "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin. With the release date of the long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick fast approaching, it's time for Lady Gaga to try and fill those shoes.

The pop star took social media to announce her contribution to Top Gun: Maverick, writing a lengthy statement explaining what the song means to her and everyone involved. Though there is not a snippet of the song included in the post, Lady Gaga does give a title and release date for her newest work, and it's very soon.

On Instagram, she says that her new song, entitled "Hold My Hand," has been in the works for years. The singer also claims that the track is multilayered and "a love letter to the world during and after a hard time." She names "Tom and Hans and Joe," (presumably Tom Cruise, Hans Zimmer, and Joe Kosinski) in thanks, as well as BloodPop and Ben Rice as collaborators. Though no details are given as to what musical style "Hold My Hand" will be, the small sample of lyrics at the end of the post as well as the themes have many believing it will be a ballad. The song will be released on May 3, 2022.

This is of course not the first time Lady Gaga has written songs for the screen. She previously had the lead role and wrote the soundtrack for the Bradley Cooper-directed film A Star Is Born. Her work in the film as an actress earned her an Oscar nomination, which she did lose, but she was successful in picking up the award for the film's song "Shallow." It's possible that "Hold My Hand" could earn her another win in next year's ceremonies.

Top Gun: Maverick is a direct sequel to the original film, set over 30 years later. Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer will reprise their original roles, while newcomers Miles Teller, Glen Powell, and Jennifer Connelly have been added to the cast. The plot revolves around Cruise's character Maverick, tasked with the job of training a group of new Top Gun graduates for a special mission. Among them is the son of his late best friend Goose. The film was originally slated for release in July 2019 but experienced multiple delays.

Top Gun: Maverick is scheduled to release in theaters on May 27, 2022.
