What is CITY About?
Plot and Background Information
CITY THE ANIMATION is based on Keiichi Arawi's CITY manga, which has been published in Kodansha's seinen magazine, Morning. It has been collected into 13 volumes thus far. The manga is licensed by Vertical in North America. The plot of CITY follows three high school students, Midori Nagumo, Wako Izumi and freshman Ayumu Niikura, members of the Mont Blanc Trio, as they navigate daily life in the aptly named metropolis, City. The series has been praised by critics, although many do note that the series is particularly enjoyable for fans of Arawi's classic slice of life gag manga series, Nichijou, and not quite so much for those who haven't experienced the author's more famous work.
CITY THE ANIMATION is a particularly important title because it is the first non-sequel work by Kyoto Animation in six years, since the horrible incident that took place in July 2019. The anime is directed by Taichi Ishidate (director, Violet Evergarden); with character designs by Tamami Tokuyama (key animation, Violet Evergarden: The Movie), who also serves as chief animation director. Shiori Yamazaki serves as art director, with colour design by Kana Miyata and sound direction by Yōta Tsuruoka. The cast of CITY THE ANIMATION features an all-star cast, with talented voice actors like Aki Toyosaki (Aoi Kunieda, Beelzebub), Takehito Koyasu (Dio Brando, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) and several others. The full cast includes:
