OD is the next project set to come from Kojima Productions, and frankly, it looks horrifying. The developer honored its 10-year anniversary with a special event called Beyond the Strand, celebrating Kojima Productions' decade-long legacy of crafting the Death Stranding franchise, while also revealing what the future of the studio holds. More news about OD has been anticipated for a while, and I was happy to see that it seems to be a spiritual successor to Kojima's celebrated P.T. Demo.
I'm a die-hard Kojima fan, and ever since he parted ways with Konami and went independent, I've been incredibly excited to see what he and his team have up their sleeves. Death Stranding and its sequel have been some of my favorite games of the past decade, and the promise of another attempt at horror with OD has kept me eager to learn more. After P.T. Gained viral attention only for the final product to never come to fruition, I wondered if OD would be able to live up to the hype. While it's hard to say this early on, the first glimpse at the horror title is definitely promising.
P.T. Was released as a teaser for Kojima's Silent Hills game starring Norman Reedus. Unfortunately, Konami broke ties with Kojima, which led to the game's cancellation. This paved the way for Death Stranding, continuing Kojima and Reedus' partnership.
OD Might Finally Satisfy the P.T. Craving I've Had for Over a Decade
Spine-Chilling First-Person Horror
For those who got to experience P.T. When it was available, the demo was a sweat-inducing slow-burn that blended jump scare moments with subtle psychological terror. It was a simple premise that proved to be incredibly effective, and ever since, a variety of games have tried to recapture P.T.'S magic. Indie titles like Visage have come close, but P.T. Still stands alone as a unique and heart-pounding offering.
Like P.T., OD opts for a first-person perspective, but the similarities definitely don't stop there. Creepy baby imagery, hallucinations, effective sound design, and a ghost (or demon) stalking the main character are all part of OD's first preview. It feels like Kojima is finally getting the opportunity to fully bring his P.T. Concept to life, and as both a horror lover and massive Kojima fan, it was one of the most exciting announcements for me during the Beyond the Strand livestream.
OD's "Knock" teaser shows actor Sophia Lillis trying to perform a terrifying ritual. Other cast members included Udo Kier and Hunter Schafer.
OD's Sneak Peek Raises Even More Questions
The first announcement for OD at the 2023 Game Awards definitely made me intrigued, but the new trailer has my full attention. I now have more questions than ever. Between the mysterious red tarot card to the redacted information at the beginning of the trailer, Kojima Productions hopefully reveals more soon.
The livestream also included an official poster and cast reveal for spy thriller Physint, but the wait for that project is going to be even longer than OD. As of now, OD still does not have a release date set in stone, so it's still possible that it won't arrive for another year or two.
With The Game Awards coming up, Kojima Productions could have more surprises in store, but only time will tell. I really want there to be a launch date for OD revealed, or at the very least another teaser, but this is probably wishful thinking. OD is still shrouded in a thick blanket of mystery, but what I know for sure is that Kojima is aiming to recapture the spirit of the horror demo he never got to see meet its full potential.
