Those awaiting the return of Daniel Craig's Detective Benoit Blanc can get excited, as Rian Johnson has added one more puzzle piece to the Knives Out sequel mystery.
The buzz around a sequel was instant after the smash hit that Knives Out was. Though one was quickly announced, it's been three years since the original Knives Out, and the updates have been minor. Fans know the film is owned by Netflix, and there have been cast announcements, but a new teaser has finally given fans the most tangible announcement to date.
Director Johnson took to Twitter with a short teaser for the upcoming whodunit film, which included some information already released to the public, and one big announcement. The title of the new Knives Out film is officially Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Along with the title of his new film, Johnson took some time to talk about his inspiration for the Knives Out franchise and the character of Benoit Blanc: author Agatha Christie. He praises the famed mystery writer, giving her credit for her ability to expand the whodunit genre and blur the lines. Furthermore, he talks about Christie's ability to have every novel stand on its own in tone and ambition and says he would aspire to do the same with his Detective Benoit Blanc stories.
Knives Out was released in 2019, despite being conceptualized by Johnson in 2005, and was received extremely well by both fans and critics alike. It achieved multiple Golden Globe nominations as well as an Oscar nomination. The film is best known as a whodunit story surrounding a rich family played by an all-star cast including Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, and the late Christopher Plummer. It also launched the international career of Ana de Armas.
The trend of featuring a star power-filled ensemble cast seems to be continuing with Glass Onion. The sequel includes actors like Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, and Dave Bautista among other famous faces. Hardly anything else is known about the film, including the plot. Though Glass Onion will feature the character of Benoit Blanc, it's been confirmed that this will be an entirely new story and will stand alone from Knives Out.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will debut on Netflix in late 2022.
