Summary
- Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 may not feature Theresa, which could disappoint fans invested in her story.
- The sequel needs to feature Theresa in some capacity to honor her role in the first game.
- Player choices concerning Theresa's fate could impact the state of the sequel, making it more engaging for returning players.
One of Kingdom Come: Deliverance's strong suits are undoubtedly its characters, and that will likely also be true of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 when it is released next February. One of Kingdom Come: Deliverance's best characters, Theresa, makes a regular appearance throughout the game, so long as players have her DLC and take time out of their busy schedules to court her. Unfortunately, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 already appears to be giving her the short end of the stick.
In Kingdom Come: Deliverance's A Woman's Lot DLC, players are given the opportunity to experience Sigismund's raid of Skalitz from Theresa's perspective, not only filling in some missing pieces of the overarching narrative but also more thoroughly developing her character and opening things up for a deepened romance between her and Henry. The DLC is worth playing for Theresa's story alone, but the romance that eventually blossoms between her and Henry puts Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 at a disadvantage. At the moment, there is no indication of Theresa being in the sequel, which could be a sore spot for fans who invested in her relationship with Henry in the first game. It would also be unfortunate for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 to exclude such a great character, simply because of what she could add to the story. As such, the sequel needs to find some way to honor her place in the first game, even if it has chosen to move on.
Inside Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Approach to Historical Authenticity
The Best War Games speaks with Warhorse's Tobias Stolz-Zwilling about historical authenticity and research in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Can't Forget About Theresa
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Needs to Tread Lightly if It Ostracizes Theresa
So far, there has been no mention of Theresa appearing in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Not only has she not appeared in any of the trailers or gameplay footage for the sequel, but Henry has been shown engaging in romantic endeavors with a woman other than Theresa, arousing suspicion that Henry's charming love interest from Kingdom Come: Deliverance has been carelessly replaced. It wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if Theresa is ostracized in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, but the sequel will need to tread lightly if it chooses to go that route.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Arguably Needs to Feature Theresa in Some Way
Even without Kingdom Come: Deliverance's A Woman's Lot DLC, Henry and Theresa still experience a budding love affair in the base game. As such, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 needs to feature Theresa in some way, even if it is just a brief cameo or flashback just to clarify why she and Henry chose to go their separate ways. Of course, this is assuming Henry really has moved on in the sequel and there is a new love interest. After all, this would make sense as developer Warhorse Studios has confirmed that Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 can be played without any knowledge of the first game.
This route still doesn't show any preference for those players who do have knowledge of the first game, however, so Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 may have no choice but to feature her. At the very least, players should be given the choice of whether Henry and Theresa remain a couple from the beginning of the game, perhaps by giving them choices concerning the major events of the first game and which of those choices has gone on to influence the state of the sequel's beginning. This might be enough to help returning players feel better about the importance of Theresa's role in Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
It could be that Warhorse is intentionally teasing Theresa's departure in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 to spark conversation about it, and it won't ever amount to anything, but that might be wishful thinking. Nevertheless, Theresa is far too developed of a character and much too important to Henry after her A Woman's Lot DLC in the first game, so it would be a shame if Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 chose to exclude her.
