Following on from the Besieged quest, Hunger and Despair is one of the last main missions in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, taking place during the long and arduous siege of Suchdol. More specifically, it takes place on the 25th day of the siege, meaning Henry and his friends are starving.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - 6 Ways To Make The Game Harder
These tips and ideas should help players make Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 harder to play, offering a more gritty and rewarding experience.
To complete Hunger and Despair in KCD2, players will need to find food, fend off attackers, and ultimately prepare for the following Reckoning quest.
How To Find Food - Hunger & Despair - KCD2
Given the quest's name, finding food for Henry and Hans is unsurprisingly one of the main objectives. However, it is technically an optional task if players are in a rush or struggling. To advance the quest without finding food, follow the marker to the kitchen to ask Janosh about food. He will tell Henry there is none, and players can trigger the next part of the quest by returning to Capon and refusing to find food.
There are disadvantages to this choice, however, as Hans' opinion of Henry will be lowered, and Henry will be hungry and weak when the castle is assaulted once more. The following are some of the ways to find food in Suchdol.
All food in Henry's inventory prior to the siege is taken away and shared as rations. There is no way to prepare for this aspect of the quest.
Find Dog Meat
By talking to the Dry Devil or of their own volition, Henry could find and kill a stray dog wandering the outer bailey. A crossbow or longbow is best for this. They can then cook the meat in the kitchen or take it to the dry devil, who will make soup.
However, if players found Mutt earlier in their playthrough and kept him, he will replace the stray dog, making this dark choice even worse. Most players will likely want to discourage the Dry Devil from touching Mutt, but if they decide Henry is hungry enough, the Dry Devil will thankfully do it.
Leather Shoes For A Broth
Another option for food is to talk to Father Godwin, Samuel, and Musa in the inner bailey. The fact that the leather from shoes can be used to make broth will be brought out, and they will suggest to Henry that he could 'borrow' Captain Frenzl's wife's shoes.
To get these, head inside the castle as if going to Henry's room. Captain Frenzl's wife will be here, and the most likely dialogue to succeed is:
- Those shoes have no use for you anymore.
As this is an intimidation check, it's best to be clad in full armor. If successful, she will give Henry some keys to take the
Lambskin Shoes from her chest upstairs. If not, players will have to deal with a guard outside her room and then lockpick the chest.
Once you have the shoes, return to Musa in the kitchen to make the soup.
Horse Meat
One of the optional objectives during Hunger and Despair is to help the groom calm the horse, Boudica, and then ride her around the yard. This prevents her from growing weak and dying. However, if players are desperate for food, they can take out their crossbow and kill Boudica.
This will grant Henry lots of horse meat, which can be cooked in the kitchen, providing Henry and Hans with more than enough food.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - All Longsword Combos & Where To Learn Them
There are 10 longsword combos in KCD2 for players to learn, and this guide will show players where they can pick up these master techniques.
Fend Off The Attackers - Hunger & Despair - KCD2
After finding something to eat or not, everyone will attend a funeral for the fallen, but just as Father Godwin finishes, the castle is sieged once more.
During the attack, Henry will need to survive and complete a number of objectives.
Knock Down The Ladders & Get The Enemies Off The Walls
Knocking down the ladders is the most important task, as this will prevent more soldiers from entering the castle. To do so, Henry will need a polearm, so make sure to have one equipped before starting the fight, or look for them on a rack next to where Captain Frenzl is standing.
For the best chance of success, sprint up to the ramparts and knock at least one ladder down, ignoring any other combatants.
There are four ladders in total, but Henry will likely need to deal with some of the enemies before knocking them all down. This ties into the other objective of defeating all combatants on the walls. Once both of these tasks have been done, a cutscene will play where Sir Hans gets shot.
Eliminate Enemies In The Tower & On The Rear Wall
After the cutscene, Henry will be thrown back into the chaos and will need to enter the tower and take out all enemies inside. Deal with enemies on the lower ramparts before climbing the stairs to the next floor of the tower. Rinse and repeat, and the attack will conclude.
Say Goodbye To Hans Capon & Katherine - Hunger & Despair - KCD2
The next part of the Hunger and Despair quest is lots of cutscenes, first in the outer bailey and then a large meeting at the table inside the castle.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - Where To Find Hans’ Dead Company
After a tragic start to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, players can revisit the game's opening scene to pay respects to fallen comrades.
Once the meeting is concluded, players then have the option to bid farewell to a number of characters. If players are looking to romance Katherine, then talk to Jan Zizka first to learn more about her past. Then go to bid her farewell. If Henry has maintained a good relationship with her, there will be a dialogue option, but the deed won't happen until later, when Henry goes to get ready for his mission with Samuel.
This is also similar for romancing Sir Hans Capon, but Henry cannot do both, so players will have to choose. Both of these romances require plenty of setup from previous parts of the game.
