Killer7 is being review-bombed on Steam due to the introduction of AI upscaling to the game’s cutscenes. Despite being a port of a beloved title from the 2000s, the Steam version of Killer7 has recently become much worse according to the fan base.

Killer7 was originally developed by Grasshopper Manufacture in 2005 for PlayStation 2 and GameCube. Widely praised as one of the best games made by Goichi Suda, the legendary developer also known as Suda51, Killer7 is a unique action-adventure title that quickly became a cult hit. In 2018, the game was released for PC via Steam and immediately garnered Very Positive reviews, with 90% of all gamers liking it on the platform until a recent blunder.

Now, Killer7 is being review-bombed on Steam, with its recent reviews being Mostly Negative. While it’s not uncommon to see recent games getting review-bombed on Steam, it's unusual for it to happen to a port of a 2000s game that has been available for over five years. The negative reviews began pouring in soon after the introduction of a recent Killer7 update, which promised to offer remastered videos with smoother playback, as well as other graphical improvements, including upscaled textures. However, this update was not very well received, as many gamers remarked that it essentially ruined the vibe of Killer7. In several reviews, gamers complained that the cutscenes look terrible now, as the AI upscaling patch seems like a downgrade.

Killer7 Players Review-Bomb Game After NIS America Uses AI Upscaling

Following recent releases like Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, a remaster of the classic Grasshopper Manufacture which added several quality-of-life improvements, it’s understandable how disappointing the new Killer7 update has proven to be with fans. Fortunately, Killer7’s update does bring some improvements, such as bug fixes and the addition of DualShock support. However, many players believe that these positive changes have been overshadowed, citing that the AI upscaling ruins the game’s immersive, bizarre atmosphere.

Not everything is bad news for fans of the classic title in 2024. A few months ago, Suda 51 and Shinji Mikami showed interest in bringing back Killer7. According to the developers, making a “Complete Edition” of the game would be a good idea, and there were even hints that a sequel could be made someday. Unfortunately, these comments are not an official announcement, so gamers can only hope that the developers will eventually return to the Killer7 IP to bring back the cult classic in a more acceptable form.
