Eddie Murphy's Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley will add talented industry veteran and star of Footloose Kevin Bacon to the already star-studded cast. The announcement concerning Bacon is just the latest in a series of high-profile additions to the upcoming Netflix movie project.

Netflix's Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley is set to be the fourth film in the Beverly Hills Cop movie franchise, based on characters by Danilo Bach Daniel Petrie Jr. These movies revolve around Detroit cop Axel Foley, who is played by Murphy, the prolific actor with several beloved comedies to his name. The Beverly Hills Cop movies all feature Foley leaving his jurisdiction to investigate happenings in Beverly Hills, with each movie giving a different murder or violent crime with links to California. The upcoming fourth movie is no different, with the few plot details available pointing to the murder premise being used once more.

The Wrap has reported that Bacon, represented by MGMT, Gaines Solomon, and Viewpoint, will join the project in a yet-to-be-revealed role. The addition of Bacon to the cast, which also consists of many returning names, including Murphy reprising his lead role, will elevate the project even further than expected. Other new names on the project include Inception's Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige, the lead star of 2019’s Zola. Bacon himself has a host of other projects he’s involved with, including an upcoming adaptation of the novel Leave the World Behind.

Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley is set to be helmed by Mark Molley in his directorial debut after taking over from co-directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who left the helm of the fourth Beverly Hills Cop to work on the proposed DCEU Batgirl project, which Warner Bros. Discovery has since canceled. The writing falls to Will Beall, who recently added the script of DC's Aquaman to his list of works. Beverly Hills Cop 4 will see him try his hand at living up to previous screenwriters Larry Ferguson, Steven E. De Souza, Warren Skaaren, and even co-progenitor Daniel Petrie, Jr.

While some might expect some fatigue from the formulaic series, the movie is likely to pleasantly surprise audiences, with beloved star Murphy noting that he refused to sign on for Beverly Hills Cop 4 until the script was right. Adding new faces like Bacon and Gordon-Levitt will also offer older fans of the franchise a new experience within the confines of the Beverly Hills Cop format. At the same time, the returning cast will ensure that the well-loved element of the movies will carry into the next iteration.

Beverly Hill Cop: Alex Foley is set to release on Netflix in the US with no release date currently available.
