The conclusion of the Shibuya Incident was one that very few saw coming. After the deaths of all the Special Grade Cursed Spirits, most were convinced that the heroes had finally gotten the upper hand, until Pseudo-Geto made his eventual appearance at the end and revealed that all of this had been going according to his plan. Upon Mahito's defeat, he managed to absorb him using Cursed Spirit Manipulation and gained his Idle Transfiguration Cursed Technique for a one-time use.
In fact, the entire Shibuya Incident was orchestrated by him in order to make sure that Gojo would be trapped in the Prison Realm so he couldn't get in the way of this ultimate plan. Once he gained Idle Transfiguration, he used it on 1000 people from across Japan, finally starting the thing this mysterious character had been planning for over 1000 years.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Why Season 3 Will Have The Biggest Fights Yet
How is Jujutsu Kaisen aiming to go bigger than the Shibuya Incident? Only a huge battle royale set across the country, of course.
What Exactly Was The Culling Game And Why Was It So Important?
The Ultimate Battle Royale
In essence, the Culling Games were the result of over 1000 years of planning by the ultimate villainous mastermind of the franchise, Kenjaku; the true identity of Pseudo-Geto. Kenjaku was an ancient sorcerer implied to be even older than Sukuna, who had only been driven by the desire to fulfill his morbid curiosity above everything else. His ultimate goal had always been to optimize Cursed Energy in order to facilitate humanity's evolution.
The way he went about doing this was very interesting. In the simplest terms, Kenjaku believed that no matter how powerful a Jujutsu sorcerer is, they are always bound by the limitations of their humanity, which, as a result, also influences the strength and potency of the Cursed Spirits that are born from their fears. In order to see how humanity can evolve, Kenjaku believed that they must merge with Master Tengen by joining all the Cursed Energy in the world and forming a singular Cursed Spirit that is essentially the embodiment of chaos.
Are you listening, Sukuna? It is beginning once again. The world of Heian. The Golden Age of Jujutsu!
In fact, even Kenjaku himself didn't know what this would look like, but he had perfectly laid out the steps for how it could be achieved. Throughout his 1000 years on the planet, Kenjaku went around to many different Jujutsu sorcerers and Curse Users across the many eras of Japan and made deals with them to bind themselves to certain Cursed Objects. In the modern day, he somehow made sure that all of these Cursed Objects were ingested by random civilians to lie dormant until the time was right.
This time proved to be the end of the Shibuya Incident arc, where he broke open the seal on these objects. In doing so, the Cursed Objects released the souls of the long-dead sorcerers into the bodies of the people who ingested them, allowing them to reincarnate in the modern age as players in the Culling Game. The others who took part in this event simply had their techniques awoken remotely by Kenjaku, were other Curse Users or current-day Jujutsu sorcerers.
Now that the players in this event have been established, its main purpose was to have each one of these players take part in a massive battle royale that stretched the entirety of Japan, which was broken up into 10 separate colonies. Upon entering any one of these colonies, people are automatically made players in the game and are teleported to a random location within the territory. Players had to kill other sorcerers and participants in order to accrue points, and the one with the most points by the end of the game was to be crowned the winner.
However, Kenjaku's true purpose with this was to get everyone to release a certain amount of Cursed Energy, which would eventually go on to birth the ultimate Cursed Spirit. Kenjaku had spent centuries planning the Culling Games and made innumerable Binding Vows and pacts in order to ensure that the event met its purpose no matter what happened, even if he died.
Rules of the Culling Games:
- Those who took part in the game due to the activation of their Cursed Technique by the Idle Transfiguration ability must choose to participate within 19 days of their technique's activation.
- Anyone who refuses to participate within this time undergoes a forceful Cursed Technique Removal, which ends up killing them in the process.
- Anyone who enters one of the 10 colonies, whether they're Jujutsu Sorcerers, Curse Users, or regular people, is made an active player of the game.
- The main objective is to gain the most points by killing or defeating other players.
- Sorcerers, or those with the ability to use Cursed Energy, are worth 5 points, while non-sorcerers are worth only 1 point.
- Anyone who ends up with 100 points, excluding their own value, is able to add a rule to the game. They can continue to do this for every subsequent 100 points they achieve.
- These rules can only be added if they are in accordance with the previous rules and don't go against them in any way.
- Those whose points remain the same for a total of 19 days are also subject to Cursed Technique Removal.
Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
